I wasn't here in LA when Red Rhodes was at his most visible on the local scene. (Just an isolated Nixon-era teenager discovering country music on a distant planet called Oklahoma.) I was just over on Dave Van Allen's Tom Brumley/Rick Nelson thread (http://steelguitarforum.com/Forum15/HTML/005995.html) and the sound clip immediately put me in mind of the swirling organ-like sound Red got on Michael Nesmith's "And the Hits Just Keep On Comin'" (ca. 1972) LP. Does anyone know what brands of steels Red used and when--or on what albums/cuts? Could "And the Hits..." album have been in his ZB period perhaps? Red was my first pedal-steel hero, although Pete Drake was likely the first steel player I ever heard of (his Talking Steel Guitar told me, I think.) And therein lies the seed of a new and different topic. But in the meantime, anything anyone knows and remembers about Red's steel playing will be eagerly devoured.

I'm not sure which steel Red used on that cut, but we built him a Dekley around 1978 or 1979. While he was at the factory, I asked him what he used for the organ sounds. He said (and showed me) that all he used was a wide vibrato with his left hand, no effects at all!

Jim...I saw Red playing that Dekley at his shop in Hollywood one day around that time. First time I ever heard a Roland JC120 chorus. He was a true classic!

Al Gershen in Grants Pass, Oregon was a friend of Red's and still plays Red's old Fender 400 Complete with home-made knee levers. Al's email is aldg@charter.net.
