a Lady that teaches hawaiian dancing brought in her old records for a transfer at our studio. Lots of interesting tracks, but this one in particular blew me away. Anyone heard this before?

A friend in Honolulu told me the player is Pua Almeida and the singer is his step father Johnny Almeida.

I was told by my great grandfather's youngest nephew's step sister's husband that this was Hank Williams. He said Hank was making up the words cause he really don't speak Hawian.

I am positive the singer is the great Johnny Almeida. Johnny was born blind however this affliction didn't stop him from mastering the mandolin and composing a massive amount of Hawaiian music. The steel COULD be Pua when he was younger. (Isn't that terrific steel ? !!!) I do feel reasonably certain it NOT Billy Hew Len playing steel on this cut. |

that's the problem, she had only this tape she'd been using for years to teach all sorts of polynesian dances. No names of the songs.
She actually identified all the songs by the dances she did, not by the song names. There was alot of other interesting stuff, even a newer sort of "remix" style hawaiian song that had some E9th sounding licks on it, pretty cool in a campy sort of way.

Mike...Are you SURE the song is Ai Ka Kou ? I think not, but am strapped to know the actual title. Perhaps Jeff Ah Hoy might be able to confirm the title. The mele I am familiar with, (which is also titled Ai Ka Kou) is usually played/sung at a much slower tempo, and has a different melodic line....? |

Hi Keoki--the reason I say it's Ai Ka Kou is because of the ending, where they seem the bring the same lyrics in, but I realize now that it's most likely a medley.
Ai Ka Kou excerpt I'm no expert, just bringing to light something that struck a bell.[This message was edited by Mike Neer on 10 April 2004 at 09:49 AM.] |
