Does anyone know who the steel player was on "Something In My Heart" and "Highway 40 Blues"? Also, does anyone have the TAB for these tunes?

'Highway 40 Blues' was Bruce Bouton - I think he did the other one, too, but I'm not 100% sure.

I'm sure the tab's been posted on here before now - do a 'search'.

I'd have to dig them out of my "archives" to be sure, but I believe that Bruce has the solos on "talk tapes." The tapes are excellent, BTW. LLoyd Green did a lot of cuts on Ricky's albums, too.

If you like Bruce Bouton's playing, you have to get the above video tape. It may have been a while ago, but the information is just as viable today, as then.

Go to the above url, and you can listen to samples from the tape. Good Stuff!

when Bruce left Ricky Skaggs, the band was never the same. nothin against Mike Smith(beleive that is his name), but when Bruce was playin with Ricky, they were the BEST band playin, hands down.
Bruce does have tapes he talks you through each string picked. I had several of his tapes and sold them a few weeks ago.
he's a thumb-middle finger picker, and can speed pick with the best of em.

I think Terry Crisp replaced Bruce in the Skaggs band.

Bruce played on all albums untill he left Ricky but he did not all the tracks.

Buddy Emmons, Weldon Myrick and Lloyd Green played on many cuts.

Buddy used the phaser effect in the Session 500 amp on the "Sweet temptation" album - very cool C6th!
Weldon did some great works at the "Highway & heartaches" album.
Lloyd`s closing solo on the song "Nothing can hurt you" are some of the greatest steel solo of all time!

It is amazing to hear Bruce`s development from album to album during the eigthies - getting better and better for each album.

I think Bruce has some of the best Push-Pull tone you can ever hear!

I agree about the steel work Lloyd Green did on 'Nothing Can Hurt You', I've listened to that solo a million times and I never get tired of it.

I was fortunate enough to work with Ricky Skaggs for about 3 years after Terry Crisp went with Reba. Ricky and I got into a conversation one time about Lloyd Green and the solo on "Nothing Can Hurt You" came up and Ricky told me... verbatim... that it was Lloyd Green's song featuring Ricky Skaggs on vocal. That leaves little doubt about what Ricky thinks of Lloyd's playing, doesn't it? I'm just glad that we never played it live!!! Sometimes you can play all the notes, but it's really hard to capture the feel. Lloyd is such a GREAT player and a super guy to boot. And in case you don't already have it...Lloyd's new CD is pretty awesome!!! AHHH, the touch and tone of one of the Masters!!!

p.s.
Ricky also told me that the stuff he had to fade out at the end of "Nothing Can Hurt You" was Killer! He always said he'd let me hear that sometime, but it never happened. I've still got his phone number though and I haven't forgotten that he said that!

Tim,
Lloyd actually played "Nothing can hurt you" LIVE with Ricky and the band at the ISGC in 1988.
Terry was with the band at the time and let Lloyd sit in for some songs that he did in the studio.
Ricky also told the story about the solo that went to fade but on stage he said "- I`m kidding"!
Maybe he didn`t?.....

I just got this e-mail from Lloyd:
---------------------------------------

-Reading about "Nothing Can Hurt You" brought back long forgotten memories about recording with Ricky Skaggs. He was simply a true musical genius, one who wouldn't accept less than a musicians best in the studio, thus the exceptional work by Bruce Bouton, Terry Crisp and me on his recordings. I loved recording with Ricky because he was such a good musician and perfectionist. I knew I was working with an equal when we cut and what would come out of those sessions would be as good as I could play.
It made recording with many singers less exciting since few were as musically knowledgeable as Ricky. His sessions validated, to me, why I loved recording so much. He is, preeminently, a musician, like all the great studio players. He truly was one of us in the purest sense.
My solo fade on "Nothing Can Hurt You" is exactly 1 minute and 7 seconds long. Ricky had just let me play from my heart on that one, and the entire solo was close to three minutes. He told me he used all of it that Epic Records would allow. He wanted the entire performance. After the intervening years I sure would like to hear the missing part again, too.
------------------------------------------

Well there we have it from the man himself

I would really like to hear the intire solo...

it seems that Lloyd Green had way more to do with Ricky Skaggs music than what we think.I sure do miss the old Ricky Skaggs music (country-grass we can call it I guess). His bluegrass that he does now is ok but not as exciting as the old boys (at least to me) like Flatt and Scruggs or Stanley Brothers. But his country music in 80`s was out of the sight, plain great.Wish he would go back and start doing that again.
btw,Tim ,I still have you on my tape from Montana and still working on the licks you showed me.You are a great guy and great musician yourself, happy easter to you and the rest of the guys on here.
