Hmmm...interesting. I guess there'd only be 4 faces, right? Let's see...
Emmons
Chalker
Green
Byrd
How's that? (I'll elaborate more, later...maybe.) |

Well, if they were carved into a mountain, wouldn't they be rock players- say,
Young
Garcia
Cage
Kleinow....

We probably need a lot of mountains to carve all those heroes in!

Left to Right...will Emmons be in the "A" position and Day in the "C" position? |

There definitely is a common theme on the list for sure.
And shouldn't it be carved into
Mount Ho'o'pi'i[This message was edited by David L. Donald on 04 April 2004 at 03:29 AM.] |

Emmons, Green, Byrd, Franklin
E minor/major 7, a cool chord from very cool players.
Paul may be young in comparison, but he has done things no one else has IMHO.
And the Steelmore monument on Mount Ho'o'pi'i
would be in Hawaii of course.
That gives a good excuse for all steelers to go there, buy the map of the stars, drive by and stare at Jerry's mailbox in abject reverence! [This message was edited by David L. Donald on 04 April 2004 at 03:28 AM.] |

" I like mountain music, good ol'mountain music, played by a real hillbilly band ! I like rural rythym... I can play right with 'em... I think the melodies are grand !
I've heard Hawaiians play... in the land of the wicky-wacky... but I must say... I like Turkey in the Straw, by cracky ! I like mountain music, good ol' mountain music... played by a real hillbilly band !" |

This is tough. There are more great steel players to chose from than there was great presidents.
1 Emmons
2 Day
3 Byrd
4 Chalker
Then there is Bud Isaacs who gave us pedal steel as we know it. I would guess Pete Drake played on as many top 10 recordings as anybody. There are many who have contributed so much to the steel guitar. We need more mountains. |

I would have added Chalker for sure if there was more than 4 heads.
It seems pathbreaking and virtuosity are the right criteria here. Did they really advance the instrument and techniques on it, more than any others.
As opposed to being a really, really fine player within a already defined style.
Did they take that style to unheard of heights?
Create effectively a new style?
Some how I think Mt. Ho'o'pi'i MUST have 6 heads to make the cut fair. |

Since its founding fathers, wouldn't it have to be
MacAuliffe

Murphey
