This is always one of the better music rags on the stands, but this month they have 2 excellent articles on steel, and the finest obit of Jerry Byrd I've yet seen(by Rick Kienzle).

Full page reads on 30 yr. old lap steeler Megan Hickey of the 'Last Town Chorus', and 22 yr. old 10 string console player Velt Collier of 'The Lee Boys', show that steel keeps making strides into the newer music scene and is getting positive attention from some of the printed media.

Anybody familiar with these groups sounds and the respective steeler's styles?

Not much to find on Megan, but here's the link to the gospel group, www.leeboys.com

Megan Hickey can be heard on the Last Town Chorus website - http://www.thelasttownchorus.com/ - there are several full length mp3s of songs. Her lap steel playing is somewhat unconventional, kind of ambient with lots of delay effects. Very slow songs with quiet vocals. The web site says her main instrument is an Oahu Diana, and she also plays a Rickenbacher Ace.

I have the Lee Boys cd, and Velt Collier is shown with a Carter single-neck pedal steel, and I'm under the impression this is what he plays throughout the record. He is an outstanding player.

Hi,

I served as producer for the new Lee Boys "Say Yes!" CD on Arhoolie.

Roosevelt played pedal-steel on that album. But as most of you know, generally the sacred steel pedal-steelers don't use the pedals a whole lot. In my opinion, there is much that transfers to lap-steel.

You can correspond with him through www.leeboys.com. And he should be home--they just returned from Cognac, France.

The Lee Boys are having a concert and album release party at the Bamboo Room in Palm Beach, FL Friday night. See you there...

And yes, that was a nice Jerry Byrd obituary.

Bob

Bob-Roosevelt gets some excellent, "fat" tone out of that Carter. I don't know what he-and you did to capture that, but it sounds great. Makes me want to buy a Carter!

I know that this is getting off on a tangent about Carter PSG's, so I'll reel it back in: Congratulations on a job well done! It's a very good CD.
