I just bought a copy of the new Waylon Jennings-Tribute CD "Lonesome, On'ry And Mean" that has a variety of Country and Alternative artists doing Waylon songs. First, this is a great record with a variety of artists like Guy Clark, Nancy Griffith, Alison Moorer, Jack Clement and Kris Kristofferson. Steel is not on all songs, but...
It includes a version of "Nashville Rebel" sung by Junior Brown, with the great playing of Lloyd Green. I think this track is alone worth the price of the CD. First Junior plays a great guitar solo and then Lloyd takes over for one of his amazing solos - man, that's great stuff!
Kind Regards, Walter

I don't wanna' stir up a big hornets nest here, but does anyone else feel that the Waylon tribute disc may have been rushed? Were these the best artists available to represent a country music legend? I personaly feel that he deserved better. Some of the the artists on board were fine. Some others I could have done without.

No hornet's nest, Robbie, I just like the record. There's a few songs on it I don't consider among my favorites, well, but that's how it is.
I don't know if there is something like an "official" tribute record to an artist. If you think about all the Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard and Hank Williams tribute records that have been done in the last few years, which one is the "official" record and which ones are not?
And, if you ask for the best artists available to do a record, it will always be a matter of personal taste...
Kind Regards, Walter

Point well taken. I just meant that there are a few more of Waylon's contemporaries/friends/artists that would have no dobut loved to have taken part in such a project. But, as you said, there are more than one tribute album out there for other artists. Maybe this will be one of many, good and bad for Waylon.

There IS already another Waylon tribute album out, on RCA with a few more "mainstream" artists perhaps than the Dualtone one (Kenny Chesney and Kid Rock, anyone?) I'm sure they had a much bigger budget, and some may prefer it. And though tastes differ of course, to me nobody embodies "early" Waylon better than Junior Brown does. For what it's worth I played a lot with Junior years ago and have always thought he was great, and I also played on a different track (Allison Moorer's) on the album discussed here. In my humble opinion, this version of "Nashville Rebel" represents Junior at his very best, Lloyd at his very best, AND the best single tribute to Waylon that any artist is ever likely to do. Anyone who's even half as enthusiastic as I am about Lloyds recent resurgence needs to hear this track... [This message was edited by Pete Finney on 27 March 2004 at 11:29 PM.] |

Pete, the Alison Moorer version of "Storms Never Last" is definitely one of the highlights of the album!
I sure hope there will be more tribute albums to Waylon - he would deserve that. Mooney's participation in one of those would be great!

Thanks Walter! Allison and the producers wanted everybody and especially the steel to play as "minimally" as possible and keep it sparse,so we did. So it's not exactly a steel showcase, but it turned out nicely for what they wanted... |

Lloyd Green did a excellent and wondeful solo on the song Nashville Rebel and after hearing it 20 times there is really no way to play that part better! We all need Lloyd back on the recording scene in Nashville! I find no words telling everybody how much I appreciate this kind musician and wonderful friend of mine. Each solo of him is so much inspiring for early beginners as much as for professional players. |
