I just happened to be in the MSA Room when Buddy, accompanied by Johnny Cox came in to listen. Reece, who had been performing on his 12 string lapsteel asked Buddy to try his hand. What a show!! The firs t six pictures show Buddy with the lapsteel and the rest are of him playing a D-10 Millennium. Thought you might like to look at a legend up close. Thanks to my lovely wife Pat for doing the edits. Clik on this site and it should get them for you.

AAH Walt my friend, we would have loved to have you at the show. You bet on the pics. I was just in the right place at the right time. He and Reece, having the respect and friendship they have for each other, gave the crowd a treat. Lots of laughing going on until Buddy got the axe in his hands and then you could sense the seriousness come out. They both put on a tremendous performance Saturday Afternoon (Reece) and Night (Buddy Solo and then with Johnny Bush).. You'd been there you'll know country aint dead yet.

I just got this email from Randy Beavers' Mom. I know she won't mind my sharing it with you:

"Dear Mr. Shannon,Thank you for sharing the pictures of Buddy Emmons. I haven't seen him in a long time, but he still has that great personality smile while playing the instrument he loves and is the Master of!! It is good to see him smile after such a tragedy in his family. I am also one of those who would have loved to have been there. Hopefully I'll be able to attend a show later. The music I am sure was outstanding and unforgetable. Again, thank you for sharing and look forward to other posts on the Forum.

Sincerely,
Evelyn Beavers (Randy Beavers Mom)
Tulsa, OK

Well, Ms. Beavers, it was all you said above and we too feel a loss when tragedy strikes someone in the Steel Guitar family. It was good to see Buddy laughing and smiling and even hunching up a bit when he hit a clam on the lapsteel. Even the groan coming from him sounded professional.

OH, I almost forgot, your contribution to the show, RANDY, was one more super player. A gentleman, very courteous and polite to everyone, and besides that he can PLAY A STEEL GUITAR!!!

(OK Randy, pay up.)

It's the kind of man he is, to just sit down and try this steel for the first time ever,
in front of people, knowing he has to hit at least one good clam.
But does it anyway.

Serendipty shined on me Saturday and I happened to stroll into the MSA/Millenium room to watch David Wright and Reece trading 8's. I was thoroughly enjoying their performances and didn't notice Johnny Cox and Buddy in the audience.

Everything said about Buddy and his willingness to try something new infront of an audience is what makes his legend. About the clams he dug on the 12-string lap steel: I'm tryin' remember 'em so I can learn from 'em!

Keep on pickin'!
Glenn

Glenn, I saw you in the audience, but it was so crowded I couldn't get there to say "Howdy", so Howdy! The Man certainly put on a show and I can guarantee you it was unrehearsed.
I thought David Wright did a super job of helping out with all the pressure he had on him. Of course I was so busy trying to capture Buddy's facial features up close, I really missed a lot of music. The one "ugly" he did hit on the 12 string, he really let out a moan. A thoroughly enjoyable session though I think, and I feel fortunate to have been able to capture some of it for the folks.

Yeah, I wish he'd tab out those clams too.

Buddy always hits a clam every now and then for two reasons. 1) to let you know he is human and, 2) to see if anybody will catch it. The only way I can tell it is when he gives himself away with a real big grin and a big laugh.

Capturing facial features in photography is one of the biggest challenges to a camera owner. I really feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to 'snag' Buddy's reactions to the notes he was playing. Someone emailed me that I had redundant pictures(I think that means the same ones) on this post. Well, they're not I can assure you. You may see some of these same photos on the Emmons Website. Ernie Renn has asked, and I certainly have given, my permission to use them. Hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I did doing the camera work.
