I've been doing some digging on the forum for advise on pick-up choices for my new Celtic Cross Weissenborn copy. (which is an amazing instrument, more on that later.)
I couldnt seem to find anyone who has tried an under the saddle type pickup. I was hoping that someone has tried this on a weissenborn or acoustic guitar, and could let me know what they think about the sound.

Congrats on the Celtic Cross. I have two of their instruments which are fantastic: a Baritone Weissenborn and an Octive Mandolin.
Sunrise pickups have been used with success, although I haven't used them yet. |

Don't get an under the saddle pickup! They sound horrible for any kind of steel or slide guitar. Oh they sound bad. OH!
The Fishman Rare Earth humbucker is cheaper than the Sunrise, has a preamp built in, and is quieter. I also like its tone. I think the only thing the Sunrise has on it is a little bit more bite.

| I have two Celtic Cross weissenborn copies, a 25" and a 30" baritone and I've tried several pickup systems in them. The "Lace" mag. sound hole, "fishman" mag. sound hole, "Schatten Design" daulie sound board transducer and the "Sunrise" mag. sound hole system. Both weissenborn now have Sunrise pickups and pre amps.I feel it was money well spent, the best tone of the bunch, no feed back and a life time warranty. I just have to out live Jim. |

I have two pickups on my Superior weissenborn. I have a magnetic Sunrise in the sound hole and a Baggs I Beam under the bridge. I use a stereo jack w/a stereo cord into a Marshall acoustic amp where I can split the signal into two differenct channels. I can then balance and adjust the two pickups separately and I think it sounds WAY cool.

Do you Sunrise users have it mounted permanently, or do you take it in and out and run the cable out of the sound hole?

Permanentish (?) installation of Sunrises in my Superior and Martin 018-KH . Endpin jacks but also minijack/miniplug connections inside , so the Sunrise can be taken out . I ended up with the Sunrises after trying the Fishman , George L , Duncan and EMG soundhole pickups .The Sunrises just have a special sound. The Baggs magnetic is interesting , has anybody tried it with a weiss ? The mag/piezo combination probably sounds fantastic , I have two solidbody lap steels with piezos in addition to the Lollar magnetics and they sound huge if you split them into different amps ! (or mag to gtr amp and piezo DI to the PA )

| To hopefully answer a couple of above questions.. I had a Sunrise equipped Celtic Cross (that now belongs to forumite Jason Friesen) and loved the sound... I now have a Baggs M1 in my Lazy River and it sounds great to my ears... also very lightweight and top sensitive so it suits that guitar wonderfully I think. I just bought a Fishman Rare Earth for my Celtic Cross Baritone... couldn't pass up a deal. I'll report back when I get it. |

| I think sunrise makes the best pickups going but I wouldn't buy the sunrise pickup installation kit again. Both the end pin jacks I received had to be tightened from the inside of the guitar, not cool |

| I have installed Fishman Rare Earth Humbucker soundhole pickups in two old Oahu student model guitars (they just wish they were Weissenborns) and am very pleased with the way they sound. These pickups are "hot" enough that you can go stright to an amp, without a preamp. |

I'd say to go with a magnetic soundhole pickup of some description--and for god's sake stay away from the under-the-saddle stuff.
