I'm hoping that some of you Hawaiian players can steer me to a handful of titles that would fit in good with a country band. I've got the guys doing a few good western swing standards and burned through quite a collection of material to find songs that "work" with the "modern" crowds that flock to country music venues. I'd like to do the same with Hawaiin steel songs but I'm kinda hoping to avoid alot of the searching that I did for swing...but I have dropped a few bucks at Tower Records on "steel looking" album covers! What do you play that "works" for other than devoted or educated Hawaiin customers?...this is also a selfish quest to get to the roots of my steel guitar DNA.
Thanks,
Tom Jordan |

Do a search on this same forum for "Hawaiian tunes" or "Hawaiian songs" and you'll find earlier discussions on this same topic.
Gerald Ross has a CD of Hawaiian backup tracks which includes 24 Hawaiian favorites. It's a good selection and should keep you very busy.

People don't seem to realize there are literally hundreds of great Hawaiian songs. Richard only touched the tip. I wonder how many other states in the U.S. can make the claim of having so many songs ? Be an interesting subject, I'm sure. |

Tom,
If you will look down a couple of posts, you will see the topic 'New CD by Kay Das--Distant Shores'. On that link, go to the members music page, where there are a whole bunch of island tunes by many players. A bunch of good ideas there. |

All the songs I see listed are haole or hapa songs. So be careful if you book a gig and tell people you play hawaiian. I guarantee someone will know the difference and let you know you are a "hollywood hawaiian" or in country music a "coca cola cowboy". On the other hand I recommend Geralds cd of trax. Nothing fancy just good stuff. CC |

Tom,
Check out material from Melveed Leed. She did a lot of Hawaiian music with a country flair. Jerry Byrd did steel guitar work for a lot of her albums.
Most of her albums are on vinyl and haven't been re-issued to CD though. |

Hi Tom,
To see just how Hawaiian and Country can be blended together can I recommend "Jerry Byrd Steel Guitar by Request" C.D. as something you just gotta hear. Track 3 (Sweet dreams of you and I fall to pieces) says it all. I just can't switch it off. If that doesn't have them crying in their beer then nothing will......Patrick |
