Everything from HOW TO TUNE a guitar to what tuning is so-and-so playing on this-or-that record.....has been discussed on this Forum. That's what makes this such a great place to visit for so many of us old timers and youngin's alike.
HOW MANY DIFFERENT TUNINGS can you actually play in.........? What ones, and which are your favorites and WHY is that?

All tunings listed in order of my ability to actually play in them.
Acoustic guitar tunings, low to high:
1. CGCGCE or the same shape as far down as Bb.
2. DADF#AD rarely raised or lowered.
3. DGDGBD.
4. DADFAD and DGDGBbD--minor tunings are fun.
5. DADGAD and very rarely CGCGCD.
6. DADDAD with the heavy distortion on.
7. CEGACE--just starting to learn it, not really comfortable with it yet.
Electric tunings:
1. Extended E9.
2. CEGACE--still a very confusing tuning for me, I haven't figured out how to get the sounds I want to hear out of it.
3. C#EGACE--even MORE confusing and hard to play.
4. I've tried B11 and the Leavitt tuning a few times (B11 is very nice) but my brain just hurt, so I stopped.
Open B is probably my favorite acoustic tuning, followed closely by open D. The electric stuff is still mighty confusing to me, though.

OK Ray, these are my (3) favorite tunings.
E9/13: E D B F# G# B C# E G#
C-Diatonc: C E F G A B C E
A7/C6: Lo-A C C# E G A C E
The C-Diatonic is my very favorite of all tunings, and A7/C6 & E9/13 are a toss-up! I can play some on 9 or 10 different tunings, these three tunings get my top-votes!

E9/Pedals
CEGACEGACEG/Pedals
I just played a solo concert using Guitarzilla. Both of the 10-string necks were "prepared" , the bass neck was tuned GGDGD and the bolt-on-the-side guitar was tuned GCDEGACDEF#. |

High to Low:
C6/A7
E C A G E C# A A(low)
D9/A6
E C A F# E C# A A(low)
A6
A C# A F# E C# A F#
C#minor9
E C# G# F# E D G# E
B11
E C# A F# D# C# A F#
E9
E B G# F# E D G# E
E13/9
E C# B G# F# D G# E
E6
G# E C# B G# E D E
On my Fender Custom I use C6/A7 on the inside neck, A6 on the middle, and E13 on the outside. Those are my main/favorite tunings, but I will retune to any of the other above tunings if the mood strikes me, or the song calls for it.
E6 is one I like alot, but I don't use it very often, because the string gauges are different than any of my other tunings. I'll put that on sometimes if I feel like it, and I have a Stringmaster D-8 that always has it on the outside neck.

I think that once you "get it" on pedal steel, you can pretty much play any tuning. Remember, the pedals change the tuning. The art of playing steel guitar includes a fundamental understanding of all of the intervals that two adjacent strings can possibly have.
The "big leap" that people have trouble with is "out of order" strings like the top 2 strings of the E9th. Most of us use these strickly as "in between" notes, but the guys who really understand them treat them as equals. That's what separates monster players like Hal and Lloyd from the rest of us.

I can "actually play" any steel guitar tuning that's presented to me. I think that most pedal steel players can. My favorites are the ones I've played the most, because I'm most comfortable on them, but that doesn't keep me from trying new things.
