I don't know how it came to be, but when I play my Steel guitar, I take off my left shoe. (the one that works the pedals)
Then when I get up to get some coffee, I limp around and people look at me funny. Not that it bothers me,But I wondered,
Does anyone else have a strange quirk like that? Something odd that you do when you play. Maybe you have to turn your amp on and off 3 times before you can roll up. Or play a certain lick or scale everytime you sit down to practice.

P.S. I am not 100% crazy, only crazy enough to play the Steel. Maybe 58%.

Well, I bet every single one of us goes thru at least a small pick-check---are they on good?---before touching the first string. Although it's purely practical and lacking quirk, it can look like a Nomar Garciaparra ritual. I always give each pick a little twist and then tap my chest several times to seat them good. There is no truth to the rumor that I am actually saying to myself "you th' man" while tapping.

I have saw the late great Julian Tharpe with his shoe off on those ten pedals he was playing lots of times.

Yeah, I remember Quentin Peer from Berkley Springs WV visiting my shop with his steel guitar, he would take his shoe off to use the pedals, nice part is he had no foot odor and is an excellent picker and a friend to every steel player he has ever met!!

Ernie
PS: sorry Quentin, its bound to get out sooner or later!

I usually play with one shoe off, but it's my right one.

My friend, Steve Matlock plays a killer steel in sock feet and suits Pam Tillis just fine (as long as the socks are black, right Stevie ??) -

I'd much rather play with my pedal foot in socks. I get a much better feel of the pedals without my 13E boot on. I always feel that someone may think I am wierd, though. Oh well, I am a steel player.

Watching people in St. Louis was interesting for exactly that reason... the only thing I can remember was that Lloyd Green would reach over and give a little confirming push of the cable into the jack before every song. Not a bad idea when you think about it, actually...

The only thing that I can think of is that I (having made the mistake once...) always cycle my knees through all the levers to make sure I've flipped them down, when I first sit down...

I have this thing about my picks. Before I ever put them on I lick the ends of my fingers. For some reason when I put the picks on after this they stick to my fingers and don't move around on me. I have small hands and I have to really do some modifications on my picks before I can get them to fit my skinny fingers.

I believe I see Jerry lick his fingers a lot before he puts his picks on also. Donna
