I read and enjoy, all the threads concerning the history of steel guitar in general. The way the tunings came about, why and who did what, the way the pedals , changers, all the mechinical aspects came into being,
who dunnit and what gave them the ideas.
Before memories dim too much, or the major participants "Ride Away Into The Sunset", etc, would it be possible to have a book compiled, with each one that had a hand in it, write a chapter or two on how their ideas and contributions brought the present steel guitar into being???
There may be conflicting stories of who did just what, but that would add to the history as probably several people may have been attempting to do the same thing at the same time.
I don't have any idea how this could be done or how you could get the fellows to write their stories, and as it probably isn't financially feasible either.
I live on SS but would make a small donation to anyone who wants to "take the bull by the horns" and do it
It would sure make interesting reading for us that weren't a part of it and only have bits and pieces of the story and will leave a legacy for future generations along with their great music

This really sounds like a great idea to me, although I have no idea how this should happen.
But one thing is for sure, and everybody should keep that in mind:
We just lost Speedy and Bob, two of the legends who did so much for the instrument and its development. We are still fortunate to have a lot of musicians around who had their major impact on the Steel Guitar, either as players or as constructors, we still have the opportunity to talk to them, ask them questions, watch them play and learn from them. Correct me, but I don't think that there is another instrument in the world where the innovators are around and we can still get the history from the folks who made the history!
The Big E, Jerry Byrd, Herb Remington, Don Helms, Ralph Mooney, Bud Isaacs,... - I apologize for each name not mentioned here!
Let's always keep in mind how rich our musical world is, having those guys around, and let's be thankful for the legacy those have left us who are already gone...

| Well I agree to that this all should be written down. In addition to playing music full time, I work at and serve on the board at the Pend Oreille County Historical Society in Newport, Washington. We have a full museum on 5 acres covering everything about our county. I have been aware and concerned for some time that really nothing has been gathered together into one place or museum, so to speak about the steel guitar. Bios of all the major steel players, history of the steel and pedal steel, as well as stories, road stories, Nashville and California recording history. Yes there is bits and pieces of all this scattered about, but nothing to bring all this together under one roof and the heading of steel guitar. I am a regular forum member and have been for several years now. One of the things that I do, is, if I ever see any thing relating to history, recording, history of the major steel players here on the forum, then I print it out and store it in a box in my basement. Hopefully one day if there ever is a Museum for the Steel Guitar, I'll donate the papers to that museum-and of course, giving credit to the Steel Guitar Forum. Also, I've thought a long time now that somebody, maybe like Scotty, starting a Museum for the steel. I dont know if he has ever thought of such a thing, but I really think as far as the steel guitar world is concerned, it would take someone who has the respect like Scotty to start such a project. I'm not saying that Scotty should do this, just using him for an example-although, he be the one getting my vote to lead such a project. I'm sure that there would be enough support from people and steel players to make it happen. Duane Becker |
