Hi everybody,
With this first message I just would like to introduce myself.
I live in France and I'm new to the pedal steel guitar.
I have a Carter starter since march, but I can learn seriously only for a few month.
As I play guitar, I know it takes time to play correctly, but I think it's harder for the pedal steel guitar ...
I'm very happy to be a member of the steel guitar forum and I would like to thank you all for giving a lot of helpful informations, advices, TAB, ... 
I think I would have a lot of questions to ask as it's hard to find a teatcher in France, you'll see me in other topics 
I hope my English is good enough to be understood !

Welcome to the world of steel.
I am down near Nimes, and you are welcome to visit anytime.
I have a good teacher with 25 years playing under his belt. He also is french, so speaks steel well in french. But he is in Nimes.
Still the TGV is only about 2 hours away for you, and Stephane is walking distance from the train. I have an extra bed if you want to stay the night and pick some.
I can help you get going, but Stephane would teach you much more. I am less an E9 player than a C6 player, but it is still steel. I also have some good learning materials. It is a darn confounding instrument, but cool none the less.
The forum has been invaluable for me, I have learned the majority of things here, and Stephane and Crowbear have helped with certain technique areas.
If you come down, then Stephane could show you weeks of work in a hour or 2 and then you go back and WORK, WORK, WORK. At some point you will then come back.
In Paris, Lionel Wendling is a very strong player and good teacher also. I know of no one near Lyon. But hey that's the steel world, not many of us and spread out, especially in France.

Hello Olivier.
Welcome to SGF (Super Great Forum), and the world of pedal steel. I've been playing for a few years now and it takes a lot of time, work, frustration, and some more work. But i assure you it's worth every bit of trouble.
A while ago i got "pushed" by your fellow countryman CrowBear Schmitt to take on the C6 neck, so now i'm going through the whole beginner thing once again.

i'm glad to know that you got it and that you are happily on the way to becoming a Steeler
As for a teacher you know you can contact Lionel W, David D, Jean Yves L and even myself

Hi Olivier, Welcome to the world of steel guitar!!! I myself have walked through the "beginner's door" last December. WOW!! What a musical adventure!!! When you practise, don't forget to think about how much better you'll be when you get that 1st year or two under your belt. It takes a lot of time and a lot of patience to make the basics your own, but it is well worth it!!! I'm haveing a BLAST!!!! Again, welcome!!!  |

Ah, I didn't realise you got the Carter from Lionel. Or that you knew CB also.
Very good, your in the loop now. Lionel's been down to my studio and he is a great player. Jean-Yves is top shelf also.

Hello,
Thanks all of you for your welcome words !
As I play guitar, I know the way will be hard, but I know that things won't come nor easily neither at once ...
So I'm ready to practice a lot (I try to find the more time that I can), the questions are "what to do", "why to do that", "how to do that", ...
I have the winnie Winston and the Dewitt Scott books, so I have a lot of things to do with that first.
I'm looking for getting the "crying sound" that only the PSG can produce, but I think it will come later with practice and patience, so the hard thing to do will be to never give up ...

Lionel is far from my home, I remember having driven 10 hours the day I got the Carter starter, took the first lesson and returned to home !
I can't do that lots of time !!!
Jean Yves has never replied to my message (when I was looking for a PSG), maybe to busy ?!
You, CrowBear, you're too far too : 1120 km to go and return !!

I don't know "Stephane" in Nimes, I did a search on internet without success, can you tell me more about him.
As Nimes is not too far, maybe one day ...
Near Lyon there is a good player, Denis B., but he's very busy, has lots of work, I met him twice in gigs with his band, but it's not easy to meet him another time
But I try again !
Well, I'm on the way now and I'm happy to be here, I just have to practice now ...

As you continue to practice the things in your books the more it will start making sense. Take one song that you like, learn to play it without the tab....then keep playing that same song about 10 times every time you practice and you will start sounding better.
