I'm surprised this hasn't come up already, but for any fans of traditional country music, great harmony/duet singing and great traditional country steel there's a fantastic new album: "Livin', Lovin', Losin': Songs of the Louvin Brothers". It's exquisitely produced by Carl Jackson, who also sings duets with Merle Haggard and Linda Ronstadt (way to go Carl!). 90% of the steel playing is by Mike Johnson and is just fantastic, he's always been a great (and often overlooked) player in my opinion, and he really shines here. Among the other duets: Patty Loveless and Jon Randall, James Taylor and Allison Krauss, Pam Tillis and Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton and Sonya Issacs, Vince Gill and Terri Clark, and Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell. Bruce Bouton also plays on it, and Randy Kohrs plays some great dobro on several cuts.

It's been playing in my car pretty much non-stop, I can't recommend it highly enough...

I have to get that CD. I have become a big fan of the Louvin Brothers and the Everly Brothers lately....

Pete,
I haven't heard the project yet, but I hope Carl had the foresight(perhaps hindsight?) to hire either Jimmy Capps or Paul Yandell to play guitar on it.

Hi Gregg,

Actually, J.T. Corenflos fills the Paul Yandell "Travis picking" role on the album and does a great, and authentic, job. Carl, as might be expected, did most of the acoustic guitar. So many tribute albums have totally different players and production styles from one track to the next, I like that Carl used the same core group of players; it's a very cohesive album from start to finish, though certainly not lacking in variety or contrasts!

I've been meaning to post something about this for two weeks. I haven't stopped listening to this since I got it. Mike's playing is absolutely wonderful. There's also a Dobro player on the first track (whose name eludes me at the moment) who plays some outrageous blues licks. Bruce Bouton also plays a great track on one of the tunes. This is classic country at its best with wonderful musicians and great singers.

How was the Rhonda Vincent and Joe Nichols cut and did Mike or Randy back them? Sounds like I need to get this product.

That's the first track that Boo mentions; "Cash on the Barrelhead" and Randy Kohrs is all over it with great bluesy dobro.

Wow! What a great album. Super-harmony singing in the true spirit of the Louvins. And what a tasteful player this Mike Johnson is. Thanks for the recommendation, Pete. This record is a must for all forumites!

All the best from Amsterdam,

Roland
