It was rumored that the AFM has arranged an agreement for AFM members flying, to receive a maximum charge of $25.00 shipping when traveling with your steel. Does anyone have a link with the information that I can printout and carry with me?

I'll try that..this way I can use my ATA case which is heavier then my standard case...Don't want the airlines playing catch with the case and don't want to retire anybody from the airlines early with extra charges if possible

Here's my recent experience, FWIW:
I recently flew Northwest Airlines, Buffalo, NY to Nashville, TN. Round trip, both flights transfered in Detroit.
In Buffalo I checked my bags with the desk. I was informed my Steel in Flight Case was overweight and was charged $25. (No mention of Unions)
When returning, I checked the same luggage with a Skycap, on the curb at the airport.
I tipped the guy $10. He weighed my bags and put a "Heavy" tag on the steel.
No extra charges were mentioned.

Hi Joey,
I too use the $10.00 skycap curb check in trick...and most of the time it works...but when it doesn't it becomes a real hassle...
I've experienced the same thing with free one way, and a charge returning home, or visa versa...

All airlines except for Southwest has the 50lb limit. They are still 70lbs. The excess weight fees vary from airliner and their enforcment is all over the map as far as consistency is concerned. This past year, I've flown 'em all and sometimes they let you pass and on the return leg of the trip, nail you to the wall. It drive me nuts! As far as the union letters go, I,ve tried to use them and they are useless, because if they want to charge you they will tell you "I don't care what that letter says, OUR POLICY IS..."
It really sucks, and bribery is an option I never tried, but if it works, more power to you. Anytime you can screw the airlines, I'm all for it! |

Delta is 50-70lb=25.00, Northwest is $50.00 I believe. I went to Minn/St.Paul a month ago. Got hit for 50+80.00 for excess luggage. You can only check 2 pieces, so I had my steel and my suitcase. I had my Dobro which was the 80.00 charge. Returning, I had one of the other bandmembers who had an extra piece to check, check my Dobro. So I'm at the ticket counter, I put my steel and suitcase up on the scale. The agent said (in a snippy voice)"that one is excess weight" (pointing to the steel). So she removed the suitcase to weigh just the steel (which I know it weighs 69lb exactly), to my surprise, the steel registered 50.5lb. She said "close enough" and let my slide. Scale screw-up! Sometimes it works out. |

Chris,
A trick to get an additional piece checked, is for the guitar/bass players to duct tape or bungee cord their guitars together, and check as one. Usually, the 2 don't add up to over 50 lbs.....
