I am looking to buy some Buck Owens CD's and I would like some advice on which recordings will give me the best examples of the various Steel players Buck used over the years. Mooney .Brumley etc....I would also like a line on what was Don Rich's best stuff....IP

you are in luck!
Sundazed is re releasing Buck's catalog in great style. Go to the link and do a search on "Buck Owens"
some of the one's I've sprung for:

Carnegie Hall Concert- Brumley, Rich et al in perfect form 1966

two lps one cd Together Again/MyHeart Skips A Beat (Mooney and Brumley, maybe Jay MacDonald )

an incredible compilation, Country Pickin':The Don Rich Anthology- Featuring Don on guitar and fiddle instrumentals and lead vocal performances culled from years of Buckaroos, with Brumley, Maness, Brightman (even a session with Emmons?) showing Don's incredible talents...

Someone in another thread was raving about Mooney on was it "On the Bandstand"?

there's lots available on CD now so go for it!
I'm sure others will pitch in with their favorites...

and let us not forget Christmas time's a comin':

VIDEO! of the Buck Owens Ranch Show available from buckowens.com... this is the real deal with complete full color shows from 1966 into te 70's, the '66 shows have classic line up of Buck, Don, Tom Brumley, WIllie Cantu and Doyle Holly...guests like Tommy Collins and Wynn Stewart, Kay Adams and Bob Morris with Faye Hardin...the earliest taped about a week before the Carnegie Hall Concert album was recorded... they are so tight they sqeak like patent leather...

Hi Dave,

"Someone in another thread was raving about Mooney on was it "On the Bandstand"?"

Just to clarify, Jay McDonald was the great player on this album. He doesn't often get a lot of credit..but, he decided not to travel, and to my knowledge, never traveled with Buck...and this was his only album recorded with Buck...I must agree, he sure did sound a lot like Moon.

Just thought I'd chime in on this one...

Jerry

Not true. Jay McDonald also appears on "Buck Owens Sings Tommy Collins" .
I now have 14 Buck Owens albums on CD from Sundazed and one original vinyl record (Together Again/My Heart Skips A Beat). That one, of course, is a must-have. If you want to hear a lot of Mooney, get "Buck Owens", "Buck Owens Sings Harlan Howard" and "You´re For Me". Brumley is on everything from about 1963 to ´68 and you can´t go wrong with any of those albums. The live recordings (Carnegie Hall and In Japan) are outstanding.

Regards, Joe H.

Dave, Isn't Together Again/My Heart Skips A Beat the title of a single album? That's what I have. Wondered if I was missing out.

Is the 'Live in London' album available again? I'd like a CD of me applauding Jay Dee's solos!

Joe,

You might be right on that album...It would figure that particular album is the only one I don't have...I'll verify that, and post again...I'll try and ask Buck.

Joe, does the album you have, list player credits? Just curious.

Thanks,

Jerry

Please Ivan:try,"BUCK OWENS SINGS HARLAN HOWARD"it's available on cd now, this is Buck Owens at his best, and the steel guitar has a major part on every song.
It's incredible steel playing, although I have no idea how is the steel player at that time in Buck's career.
a must for the steel lovers:BUCK OWENS SINGS HARLAN HOWARD>

My personal faves are "My Heart Skips A Beat/ Together Again", and "Buck Owens", which is his first LP ,I think. These are the two essential CD's. The best of the early recordings, and then Buck and the Buckaroos at their playing and creative peak.
Not crazy about "Sings Harlan Howard", it seems like there wasn't a lot of thought given to the arrangements on this one.

Ivan,

The best option would be, in my opinion, to buy the excellent cd-box "The Buck Owens Collection 1959-1990" on Rhino. Three CD's and a very nice booklet which tells the whole story and all the details from song to song. When you have this and feel for more, try the classic "The Carnegie Hall Concert". Enjoy!

Roland

HI everyone, if can I add a couple words about the "On the Bandstand" album???

It was actually both Jay and Ralph on the album. Below are the different cuts that each played on>>>>.

Ralph= King of fools,I can't stop my loving you,Kickin our hearts around, and One way love.

Jay= SawMill,Sally was a good old girl,Orange Blossom Special,Cotton Fields,Touch Me,Sweethearts in Heaven,Release Me,Diggy Liggy Lo,

and on the CD VERSION by Sundazed there are 2 Bonus tracks and both of them are Jay, they are Sweethearts in Heaven and We're the talk of the Town and both of these songs are Buck singing duets with Rose Maddox.

I hope this helps, take care.

HEY JERRY, can't wait to see you in Mesa, Az in January. STAY IN TOUCH!!!!!!!.
