As I approach the one year mark on this wonderful forum, I look back on the stupendous amount of advise and information that I have gleaned here.
One of the more interesting nuances (sometimes subtle, sometimes not) that I have picked up on is many steel player's utter disdain for all things banjo.
Is there some history to this? Please help enlighten a new guy. |

I think b0b (as our Founder) should deal with this query.
I know this much - all steel players should carry their picks AND bar at all times; that way, should you be involved in an accident, the staff at the emergency room won't think you're only a b@njo player. |

I was a hot blugrass b@njo picker at one time. I'm sure that right hand training paid off greatly when learning the Steel.
Don't take the b@njo bashing seriously here. |

I just started playing banjo after a long layoff from doing so. There are banjo patterns you can play on pedal steel and it is another technique to use. |

I think it's mostly a joke- lots of ba*jo players are also steel players. Ba*jo players are the butt of jokes made by all instrumentalists, second only to drummers and vocalists
BTW some of the most intelligent musicians I know of are ba*jo players: Pete Wernick, Bill Evans, Tony Trischka, to name a few- and they all have a great sense of humor (they'd better!)
Plus, the king of them all, Earl Scruggs, is a genius. |

Lawrence, we do NOT use the B word on this forum.
Since this is your first offence, we will let you off with only a warning this time.

I think playing 5-stg did alot for my right hand on steel.
(don't throw a penalty flag Mike P. I didn't use the "B" word)

FWIW, just like 6-stringers can NOT play like a steel player even if they stretch strings, a steel player can NOT play like a banjo player just because he can do some rolls.

The photo is Jerry Garica in the mid-sixties. He played a mean banjo, listen to Old and In the Way. |

Buck Trent!
He did to the Banjo what Floyd did to the
Piano.
Both borrowed the principle sound of the Pedal Steel with great success.

I spent the first 20 years of my musical life as a banjo picker, and I know first hand that it's not just the steelers that give 'em a hard time it's everyone. About the only musicians that don't give banjo pickers a bad time are the ones that play accordions or bagpipes.
In some states if you hang your banjo picks from your rear view mirror you can park in the handicap space.
And Joey's pic is Jerry G!! |

John, I heard Pete Wernick last summer and he is an amazing banjo picker and musician. I play a little banjo (its short with only 3 strings) and I find the fingering very similar to that of a guitar that's missing the 6th string, well and that 5th peg that you always have to get your thumb around when you move up the neck, other than that, almost exactly like a guitar. |

I've posted a banjo joke or three, but truth be known, I like banjo when it's well played.
Dave Ristrim played steel and banjo on Sat. nights Opry, he looks to be a banjo friendly PSG'ist. |

I think you'll find a lot of "Closet" "B@njioso" playing Steel.
What really chaps *their* butts is that a whole night of "Night Life", "Way to Survive", "4 Wheel Drive", and "What a way to Live" goes right down the tube when *they* pick up their 200$ washburn with the DiMarzio stuffed under the head, play "Foggy Mountain Breakdown, and Rocky Top" and everybody goes nuts, standing on the furniture, and taking off their clothes in a raptured frenzy. They feel like they might as well take that 6000$ space age Show Bud shorty knock off out and throw it in the dumpster..
Me? To Quote Sonny Barger. "Gang sex?. A lot of the guys are into it, but I never have done it that much."

Well..I guess many of the folks here have not listened much to Skaggs in the 80's or Paisley's CD's here in 2003..
On Brads CD's the Banjo is an incredible support Instrument on the tracks..
I'm certainly not a Banjo freek..but this is still only Wednesday...
I still say that picture of Garcia is Bobbe Seymour or Tiny Tim..

I think it's like looking in a mirror - they're both 'bastard' instruments (as are bagpipes!) and, in the music world-at-large, we all suffer from a certain alienation.
Our affected ridicule is based on a 'fellow feeling' in my view, and the safety in numbers principal accounts for the large number of PSG shows - when did you last see a piano-show advertised?
RR
PS: These thoughts are slightly tongue in cheek - but I may be on to something! |
