Does anyone know the origin of how Smiley was affectionately named ?

Here's an interesting article on the first smiley faces that actually appeared in 1963 and its development over the years - even its debut on to the internet. http://www.computer.org/annals/an2003/a3082.pdf

I've known OUR Smiley since about 1972-1973, when I was walking the streets of Nashburg.
I think Shot Jackson may have hung that one on him.
Shot called me a few names too, but I can't repeat them here.

Seriously, Shot Jackson was a great man with a big heart and if you have ever heard Smileys Gospel Tape, you can hear Some of Shot in Smiley's playing, especially on some of the dobro parts.

I wouldn't swear by it but I believe smiley had that name before I was born!!!!! well shortly after anyway. I thought it was Slim Coxx that gave it to him but somehow I see his moms smile in my mind and I feel she is the one who gave him the moniker or someone in the family. He will let us know. I think she had a few choices but there was already a grouch-o. He for sure had the name before he went to Nashville.I think it's the "king of the forty footers" he was awarded in Nashboig.O boy now I did it.

O.K. Smiley---Time to fess up and tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

I can see some rumors coming unless we hear it straight from the "MULES" mouth.
