Does anyone know where I might find the song "Harbor Lights"? Patti Page sang the song and if I remember correctly, there was some smooth steel on it. I heard it in a department store over the music system. The tabs would be good too. Thanks.

Jerry Byrd also has a nice Mercury record of same tune. Sweet steel also.

The first time I ever heard "Harbor Lights" was in 1951 ina drugstore in Tampa on a jukebox. It was a Harmonicats recording. All instrumental. And it featured Jerry Byrd. I could not get over (at the time) how any one could play soooo beautifully. Then when I realized it was the Jerry Byrd I had loved so dearly on older HW and ET recordings it just further made me a fan of his.

Much time has passed now. But I remember that as though it was yesterday. I went into that drugstore snackbar many times over the next few months just to hear that recording. It cost a nickle per play. But nickles were very hard to come by then. So I usually had to wait until someone else put a nickle in the jukebox for me to hear that awesome wizardy of our beloved Jerry Byrd.

Oh how I wish I had that recording.

May Jesus always bless Jerry and all of you,

carl

My dear friend Ray,

Did I confuse you? I never had the recording. I wish I did. I have heard it many times, but was never in a position to get it.

Sorry if I confused you. And yes it was recorded WITH the Harmonicats and was quite popular in the Tampa Bay area by local DJ's in the very early 50's.

I recorded Harbor Lights with Sammy Kaye years ago. That was the beginning of my stint
with Swing & Sway with Sammy Kaye...I played
real corny

No problemo there Mr. Dixon.

Jody you did not play corny. You don't now and never did according to rumor, at least.
I'm not as old as you so can't vouch for anything prior to my birth.

Carl Dixon,

What is your email address? I sent this tune to the email address in your profile here on the Forum, but it bounced back to me, undeliverable. Meantime maybe you can get it here:
http://home.earthlink.net/~ebovine/music/JB_HL.mp3
I hope this works as I have never tried this before don't have the patience to test a 30 minute up/download when I could be eating chocolate instead.

Bovine.

Nice recording. I thought for a moment that it would be the 1950 recording of the Harmonicats version w/ Byrd but it was different. I went and dug through my records and found the Harmonicats "Selected Favorites" record and listened to Mr. Byrd with the Cats.

Interesting recording. Peg o my Heart was recorded by the late studio wizard Bill Putnum in Chicago. He used the Men's restroom for reverb and the record was a hit partly due to a recording ban that was on in 1948. The harmonica was not considered a musical instrument by the union so it was not covered under the ban. The rest of the record including "Harbor Lights" was recorded/released in 1950.

If it had not be for the seemingly endless wealth of info from Carl, I would have never known this was Byrd. He is also on another cut on this record. How this remarkable pairing of virtuoso instrumentalist came about would be interesting to know.

Meantime you can swing and sway with Jody Carver, who does not sound one bit corny, at least compared to the sax section:

Ernest,

Dear friend, are you sure that is Jerry Byrd? Very respectfully, it just does not sound like Jerry OR the Harmonicats.

But thanks for sending it to me.

Mr. Dixon: How dumb can one get??? I WAS REFERRING TO ME! Not anyone else and particularly, NOT my friend and JB fan, Carl Dixon.

HARBOR LIGHTS is on the flip side of At Sundown with the HarmoniCats. I have this item.

I think it sounds like Jerry Byrd, but I don't hear much harmonica. Sounds more like an accordion to me.
I just found another one, this one labeled "Harmonicats" but it is the same recording.

Jody, I've had the record by Mr. Kaye for years, but just listened to it again, your work was very smooth. The ending was very fine. I know I've heard you alot, I have many things by Elton Britt and Rosalie Allen.
Sorry to hear about Rosalie Allen, always loved her singing and I used to listen to her radio show in 1954 when I was stationed in New York City.
Thank you Jody Carver.
