If you were playing a gig and you could have someone walk up to and say Hi and how much they enjoyed your music, who would it be.
Personally I would like my Dad so he could see all the ear pain was not too much in vain.

I have deleted my comment because in looking at this thread again, I realize that my response was not appropriate for what was intended.

..I'd be happy to have anybody say that, I'd be really happy to have any musician say that, I'd be thrilled to have any steel player say that...

...the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me about my playing was one time after I played "Teach Your Children" one of the guests called out, "nice job, steel man"...

...and Gene, I saw your post and I thought it was not only appropriate, but touching...

I would be suprised if ANY one could honestly say that about my playin. And they would be correct.

BUT, if I could play good, I would be honored beyond words if Buddy Emmons would say that. That to me would be the pinnacle of all compliments.

My dad already thinks I'm the best picker he's ever seen or heard. When I was a kid I was so bright he called me sun. I was in Austin a couple months ago and got a chance to share the stage with Rick McRae from the "Ace In The Hole Band" and he said I played good. That was a highlight of my trip.
But most of all I'd like to hear it from a tall, long haired blonde gal with blue eyes, soft lips and a huge bank account the loves musicians!

One time a nice looking lady told me that she liked the way I sang and played steel. It turned out to be the club owner's wife. The rest of the band did not appreciate it when I brought her to the hotel room that night, which her husband was paying for.
I really need to write a book......

I don't play professionally, so I'd have to say my son because he appreciates what it takes to play an instrument well. As runnerup, my wife because she's put up with the repetition/noicse of practice sessions from the lower level of our home.

I would have to say, that, any of the greats would be a wonderful boost to my ego. But, also my fellow steel players, no matter how badly I thought I had played. We as semi-pro's or bedroom pickers are terribly critical of ourselves, and a little encouragement goes a long way.

I really had that happen to me in Fort Worth, TX. with Don Helms when I played for Joe Paul Nickels and the 5 Pennies. Not that I was that good but Don is that kind of guy.
At the end of their show (Drifting Cowboys)
Don played "I'm so lonesome I could cry"...WOW

The guy paying me to play!

Honestly though, Lloyd Green, my all-time steel guitar hero.

Robby Turner did tell me that one time, after playing at one of the jam sessions that Jimmy Roby used to put on. While I felt, and still feel I didn't deserve it, it sure was a nice feeling to have someone of Robby's calibre say it!

I'm always very happy when Mrs. Lee compliments my playing. I know that she generally doesn't like the kind of music I play, so it means a lot to me when she notices and enjoys it.
