Well,"The Dumplin' " proved another point last night(Mon.),w/ The Time Jumpers. He proved that its not the instrument, but the man BEHIND it. ALL NIGHT,he played a Sho~Bud "Maverick"! That's right,a "student" guitar! And,with the exception of,about,2 songs,DIDN'T USE ANY PEDALS,& made it sound decent! The only complaint he had was, there was a hum in the p/u. He said he was gonna take care of that.
I've always said,(for comparison)that,you can give someone on the street,a $6000 Hasselblad camera,& you'll get "snapshots". But,you can give a professional photographer a $6.00 disposable camera,& get "portraits".
Job well done,Johnny.

Smiley, I heard Johnny w/the "T Js" one night in July & he played his MSA D10 & a 10 string lap steel a friend had made for him.
Not a whole lot of difference in what he could get out of them......allowing that of course you can't get all the chords on a lap steel that you can with pedals, but a single string hot ride.....what's the difference?
No peeking! |

Doug,
The point I was trying to get across was for the benefit of those, who get on the forum, & "slam" the Maverick, saying that its a "piece of junk",etc, etc. With the exception of the p/u problem,(hum, which I didn't hear) the guitar seemed to stay in tune all night,& no "traveling" problem. The guitar had a more than "acceptable" tone.
Johnny didn't seem to have ANY trouble w/ it,all night.

Smiley, thanks for the plug. I could tell all of you that I was trying to prove a point, but the fact is I was lazy Monday night and the easiest rig was the Maverick and the Sho-Bud amp. I din't even bring the pac-a-seat. The guitar was fine, it did stay in tune but like smiley said I only used the pedals on two songs. Mavericks have a lot of music in them with 3 + 1. I could start trying to find everything on a student guitar today and would still find stuff 20 years from now. Pedals are shortcuts, but I like short cuts. By the way, thanks to my friend Joe Simpson who gave me that little Maverick at ISGC. Who knows what I will play next week, probably the MSA or a 45 foot Prevost.
