All I can say is that if you weren't there Friday night in Damrosch Park at Lincoln Center, you missed something, friends. Bob Brozman opened the show and he is indeed a virtuoso on National and Weissenborn type steels, but the Campbells were just out of this world. Did I mention there were more than a thousand people there to see them? This is in New York City, folks. Such great energy, cool tone from their Sierras (must be the sacred steel guitar these days) and you could just FEEL the love these people have for the steel guitar and the gospel tradition. Were any other steel players there on Friday? I looked for Messrs. Light, Graboff, Siegel, Widgren, but did not see them, then again, the crowd was enormous. Seems the reports of the death of the steel guitar have been widely exaggerated. I for one left that show flying high, totally inspired, and so happy that I am part of the community that plays this amazing instrument.
One last little note, when I saw them last, they were playing in the classical section of the Tower Records up near Lincoln Center. A little more than a year later, they're in a giant bandshell playing in one of the most iconic cultural landmarks in the USA, if not the world. Wow. Roll on Campbells, roll on.

Jon,
LMAO, so funny. You would have loved it man, Chuck Campbell had a tone you would have been so into, got more distorted as the show wore on and his Bassman amp (I think) warmed up. Playing what looked like a 14 string Sierra, maybe it was a 13 string. I'll be sure to let you know about the next one, I learned about it from the NY times weekend section. |

Don't Messr. me, mutha! I was there and it was great! The evening was billed as "Slack and Steel". You forgot to mention the great Led Ka'apana, the reigning king of the slack key guitar was also on the bill. Led played some pretty mean ukulele as well. He's also known as one of the current greats on Hawaiian steel guitar but didn't play any that night.
Too bad it wasn't better promoted. I know quite a few folks who would have gone had they known about it and I didn't hear about it until the night before. They had Hank Thompson with Jerry Brightman on steel a while back and I didn't hear about that one until the day after! |

About a month ago The Campbells were the closing act at the Queen City Blues Festival here in Cincinnati. Man,they tore the place up!!! I got a chance to talk to Chuck after the show and sit down and try his new Sierra!
It's a 12 string. What a nice guitar and even a nicer guy. A note to you people who think that Sacred Steel is basically like slide guitar. that tuning can be confusing if you're used to E9th or C6th. But Chuck can pull off more E9th and C6th licks with his tuning than the majority of us trying to play his style. |
