Last week I had the pleasure of playing twin steels with the Dale Thomas band in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. What fun! Dale is a very talented musician and steel player that should be much better known across the country. The band is super, and play all classic country and great western swing. Dale plays an older Franklin and has a lot of Emmons C6 in his chops and was a real treat to trade licks with. Larry on sax, Mark on keys and Tommy Pickett on drums rounded out the band and were just great. I must add a special 'thank you' to Tommy who, in addition to being a fine drummer, is also a steel guitarist (he and his dad organize an annual steel show in Iowa). As if he didn't already have enough to lug around, Tommy was kind enough to bring along his D-10 Mullen HWP, rack rig, Evans amp, and packaseat for me to play on! What a guy! This made it so easy for me to just travel to Iowa and play the gig without having to lug any equipment other than my bar and picks! Tommy, you're the best!
If you're ever out Iowa way, be sure to catch the Dale Thomas band. Their schedule is on their website at www.dalethomasband.com [This message was edited by Jim Cohen on 25 August 2003 at 04:26 PM.] |

Jim, What happened to Dale's Franklin? And did he tell you that he once owned Buddy's Sho-Bud? [This message was edited by Craig A Davidson on 25 August 2003 at 03:43 PM.] |

Oops! You're right, Craig. It WAS a black Franklin. I don't know why I wrote pushpull above. I guess I had Emmons on the brain since Dale has obviously learned a lot from listening to Buddy.

Thanks Jim, I agree it was a great time in the hot Iowa sun. Two steels and four musicians pretty much filled that truckbed. We enjoyed meeting you and your family (son Josh sat in on sax for a few tunes). It was my extreme pleasure trading licks with you-a memorable afternoon. I always say there's nothing better than a pedal steel unless it's two pedal steels. |
