I agree with you about Sonny being the best kept secret. I started playing steel in the late seventies and Sonny was the man back then. He did some great session work but later I thought he dropped out of site.
Still to this day the way I check my tone at sound check is the intro to "nothin sure looked good on you" by Gene Watson. GREAT RIFF!!! remember his articles in steel guitarist magazine??

He's not a secret. He has just been overlooked by the steel guitar community in the recent past. I have been one of his biggest fans since I first started playing in the 70's. I personally like the work he did on Red Steall's records.

By the way, I am looking for a copy of the "Texas Red" album. I think this is the one with "I left my heart, in San Francisco" on it. If anyone knows where to get a copy or I can buy a copy of yours, please let me know.

Also his work on Sara Evans 2nd album and some of Gene Watson's albums just knock me out.

It don't think he is under rated. Just ask any of us that are familiar with his work. I think we just "forget' about him due to lack of exposure in recent years. I think we do this to a lot of great players that lay low. Too bad. I wish all of them could be active enough for us to hear them regularly.

I met Sonny in 1965,I believe. He had just started working the road with Bill Anderson. He had a style of playing on Bill's material that was so different and appealling, I immediately became a fan of Sonny's. After his stint with Bill, Sonny did some work in the studio with other people. His solo on Eddie Rabbit's " Two Dollars and a Jukebox," was knocked-out. I also liked the Ronnie McDowell "Watching Girls Go By" solo. Sonny is no secret by any means. Other steel players know plenty about him. He has gone about his business the last several years and made a living. He doesn't come out with a solo album every year, nor does he work Scotty's convention every year. There is nothing wrong with doing that, I just think that isn't Sonny's personal style. I posted a thread 2 or 3 years ago about Sonny needing to be in the SGHOF. He has contributed more than enough, in my opinion, to qualify. Sonny is also a perfect gentleman, and a very good human being.

I too, will attest to the ability of Sonny Garrish. He's very creative too as exibited by his ride on Ronnie McDowel's, "Wandering Eyes." In addition to his playing prowess, Sonny
is one of the nicest people you could ever hope to meet. A true gentleman.

When I went to work for Gene Watson in the mid 70s Lloyd was doing his recordings. Then Gene started using Sonny. Then he started using me !!! You think it was easy following those guys into the studio ?!?!?!

I don't know of a more recorded player, Big hits, little hits, Gospel hits, Live road shows, Opry for years, Style setting demos, Television galore, etc., find a nicer guy, he'd be a feather in the SGHOFs hat.
This guy must never sleep!
