Can anyone provide information on Gary Boggs. When not playing steel, I work as a Paramedic and a nusre in the ER approached me a few days ago saying that her uncle was Gary Boggs who played steel for George Jones, Connie Smith and a few others. Just curious as to who he is.

I believe Gary was from Clay Co, West Virginia. I knew Gary from the Mid 60's to play in the Akron ,Ohio area with a band with his brothers. When he left our area he went with Jeanie C. Riley. I lost track of Gary at that point. I was told he had a part in Homestead recording studio in Nashville in the 70's. Later in life Gary moved to Charleston, W. Virgina area. He owned a bar called the Longhorn, had a band called Southern Mix. Gary passed away 2 1/2 to 3 years ago, I think Gary would have been in his late 50's. There is a picture of Gary Boggs on the Southern Mix web sight. www.southernmix.com Check it out. |

Actually, Gary left Billy Lee's Country Palace in Akron, OH to play for Connie Smith . . . it was Chick Donner who left Akron to play for J.C.Riley. Gary then went with George Jones, who teamed up with Tammy while Gary was with him. Then, when THEY split, Gary went with Tammy until he would up his Nashville career and went back to Cut Bank, WV and opened a nice night club, with himself as steel player in the band. His son played lead, and what a talent HE is. |

Gaylon,
I remember a few early posts about Gary in the archive of Bar Chatter and have linked to one of them. http://steelguitarforum.com/Archives/Archive-000003/HTML/20011227-1-012698.html
Two of Gary's son's used to post here regularly (Hook Moore and Billy Boggs). I'm originally from West Virginia, so I've heard of him for years. Must have been a monster player.
Respectfully,
Dave Burr |

Gaylon...I met Gary Boggs in the early 70's when he came to the Playroom with Nat Stucky. At that time he was steel player for Connie Smith and Nat was using her band. He stayed at my Apt for about 3 days while we was here. We became very good friends. I visted his home in Nashville few months later and spent the weekend with him and his family. He was a super player and the nicest guy you could ever want to meet. At that time he played a white Sho-Bud that he called the Albino. I have pictures if you want me to send them. He did play with George Jones and later with Tammy Wynette. [This message was edited by Charlie Vaughn on 18 August 2003 at 03:48 PM.] |

Just a note...
Gary left Akron, to join Doc Williams at the Wheeling Jamboree around 1970...From there, he went with Connie Smith...He also played with the Homesteaders for a while, in addition to the other acts meantioned.
My family and I knew Gary very well, and we stayed in touch from time to time.
