I recently purchesed a couple of Neil Flanz'
older CD's from 62&64...Nice stuff!He also gave me a short CD of some stuff that he recorded in his living room using "BIAB"
(nice guy)sure sounds to me as if he's still got it!I dont recall ever seeing too much
posted here on the forum about him.How about it,anyone got any stories,opinions ect..

| It is my understanding that NEIL now lives in Florida. My memories of him are from the 70's and 80's in Nashville. NEIL was always a first-rate steel player...probably still is.~~W.C.~~ |

| I also bought his reissued Chord Library and in my correspondence with him, his warm personality was very prevalent and only wish I could've had the opportunity to meet him in person. |

I was happy to assist Neil in re-issuing his Sho~Bud E9th "Special Instruction Album" from the 70's. I always thought Neil would make it to HOLLYWOOD one of these days. Well,he did,indeed! Hollywood,FLORIDA!!

Neil is the best. One of my favorite folks to hang with at the steel guitar conventions-and one of the true legends of Country Rock.
Neil with Buddy Cage at the 2000 ISGC. The fellow Canadians and CR legends hadn't seen each other in about 20 years.

Yes, Neil is a truly nice person...as well as a great steel player. It's a pleasure to know him. Although, we've never met, in person...I do correspond with him via email, & by phone. A real gentleman, indeed! Now...come join us here, Neil. Where ya hiding?

Neil's unique, soulful approach and vast musicality will affect me and my playing for the rest of my life. I am fortunate to have lived in S. Florida about 14 or 13 min. from Neil's residence in Hollywood. Studying with him was not only an honor, but an inspiration.
He is always honest, helpful, creative and very generous with his musical skills and knowledge.
I am still in regular contact with him. My most recent surge in growth came as the result of learning one of his very well done instrumentals.
Thanks, Neil for a great friendship, and a terrific set of lessons I had from you when I was there.

See,its just as I thought.Neil Flanz is not just nice to me....He's nice to EVERYBODY!
Let us all not forget the players who opened
up so much for the rest of us!We are all fortunate that many of the great players of the past (and present)post here on this forum.But there are a many who deserve our thanks,though we dont get the chance to say so.Since this is such a large community,a lot of us may know someone who fits into this
frame If so PLEASE...take the time to say thanks for the inspiration...the hard work and the sacrifice....because of these people
we know the joy of music and playing the Steel Guitar...and whats that worth to you??

As a young steel player in Nashville in the mid to late 70s, Neil Flanz was very nice to me and supportive to me in a town full of steel players with chips on their shoulders and hidden agendas. I really enjoyed listening to him and playing with him in the Den on many an occasion. It is a testiment to his good character that he could be so honestly helpful and positive in a town that didn't treat him well at all. He didn't then and doesn't now express bitterness, which speaks volumes for his character.
I'm really glad that he is playing again, and really enjoyed seeing him at St. Louis a few years ago...

When I bought my first steel guitar I got Neil's Sho~Bud instruction album and it got me started with an instrument I knew nothing about. Like Dan Tyack, I had a lot of fun with Neil at the Den in the 70's, too. (BTW, Dan, I sold that yellow Emmons to Bobbe about a year ago.) After the Den closed I gave Neil a ride home to Boscobel St. a time or two, since he didn't drive much, and we listened to his great record collection and talked steel guitar half the night. Good times.

And then, mash the potatoes!
That instruction record was the first thing I got and in many ways it was the best instruction. That's how I learn play it, then walk me through it.
Never got on that well with tablature.
Neil got me going.

Neil is a terrific PSG talent and resource, who has dedicated his entire life to pedal steel guitar. I know he literally eats, sleeps and dreams PSG, when he is not playing or practicing or on the internet!!!
I hope for all our sakes there is some way he can become more audible and/or visible one day.
If anyone lives in S. Florida, it is worth the effort to look him up.

Neil is certainly all of the above! I took my first steel lesson with Neil. I look forward to more lessons with him!
Neil lives and breathes steel! It's just unfortunate that here in South Florida there aren't more venues available for him to share his wares! Trust me, the man still has "it". All of "it"
