Anytime you hear that Johnny Cox is going to be picking somewhere, you can rest assured you are going to get a 93 octane performance. This weekend at the Ozark steel convention in Branson,Mo. was no exception. Johnny played that new, beautiful, blue MSA. He gave a spectacular performance as he always does. But the iceing on the cake was his lovely wife, Joan, who bowled me over with her beautiful tone. Joannie, if you read this thread, try to find a way to weld your amp settings right where they are. I thought I had the best sounding Zumsteel ever made, but yours really had "Tone to da bone!" ~~W.C.~~ |

Hi Wayne..It was great to get to meet you. Johnny talks about you all the time. We had a wonderful time in Branson. We hadn't been there in a long time, and the Baldknobber's Theatre was a great place to have the show. Thanks for your compliments..What a band we had to back us all up..they were all pros in every sense of the word. Hope to see you in St. Louis this year. Take care.

Nice review Wayne.
Johnny and Joan, I am looking forward to hearing you two in St. Louis, if Scotty's site is still correct and you will be pickin' there. |

Hi David..we're planning on being there. Last time I heard, we both have spots to play Saturday night. I think Johnny's at 10:30 PM and I'm at 11:00 PM. I haven't heard otherwise. Come see us at our booth. We'll be right next to the MSA display.

Joan and John indeed go on 93 octane. Both of their sets were fantastic, and the jam at the end, with John, Joan, Bobby Hempker, and Dean Holman, well you can't hear better playing anywhere. This was indeed a great day. I again thank everyone involved for making July 27th 2003 such a great day in Branson.

to TERRY BETHEL: I have tried E-mailing you but get a server error message. Just wanted to say thanks for a great show in Branson. My wife and I have children and grandchildren in Harrison,so a little detour to Branson was no challenge. We enjoyed sitting out front together;just being spectators instead of performing, for a change. The sound men also did an excellent job. They helped the steel guitars to sound like steel guitars instead of cardboard with strings. So many sound men don't have a clue when it comes to pedal steel. Yours were superb! Thank you so much!

Johnny and Joan are also wonderful people with real Christian principles.
If I was healthy again I would like to just to travel with them and throw rose petals on the ground in front of them to cushion their every step.
God Bless you two

In my zeal to comment on Johnny & Joan,I failed to mention the other great talents on the Branson show. I missed the first hour so I am sure I missed someone's performance. Terry Bethel has been known to be a world class player for a long time and still holds that status;beautiful phrasing, tone, etc. Buck Grantham was smooth as silk. My old friend,Bobby Hempker, continues to improve with age. How do you do that,Bobby? Bobby was a fine, solid steel player 20 years ago;now, wow! I had never heard of Dean Holman before, but I am sure I will again. He is a young man with exceptional talent & skill. Once again, a great show!

Wayne,
Hey, I really appreciate the kind words. I remember you playing great years and years ago. I'm sure you've also improved with age. I'd love to hear you, sometime. If you ever get up this way again, give me a holler. I'm listed in the Branson ph. bood.
