I recently received (from b0b) Gary Carpenter's CD titled "Steel Guitar Favorites". I can't say enough good about this recording and Gary's musicianship. Playing about equally from both sides of the steel, Gary clearly knows is E9 from his C6. There's not a clunker on the CD. This is a CD that belongs in any steel players collection. I just wish Gary had another CD or two to buy.

Yep, I'm with you on Gary's playing. I've had that recording for awhile. He's a fine picker. |

Around here, he's the 35,000 pound bomb, the MOAP--Mother of All Pedalers.
And yet, the studio projects never really capture the fullness and richness of his live tone.
His astounding technique both thrills and depresses me. Y'all ever been there?
Buy the CDs? You bet. But, when you can, come hear him live.

If you haven't heard of Gary Carpenter, you owe it to yourself to purchase the CD mentioned above, or go hear him and his band, live at The Finish Line (Tuesday nights) if you are in the Ft. Worth area.

Ricky Davis has told me that, even among the monsters, he's the incredible Hulk. As good as the best there is.

I practice with "Gary's Favorites every day. If you don't think this is an excercise, you should try it. Knowing I'll never get where he is, its a lot of fun plus a learning experience. His Cold Cold heart, look at us, relaxin, Moon Glow, What a Friend we have in Jesus, Blues Walk. I also carry his cassett in the pickup, and wear it out when on the road. about any kind of music you wish to play is on this production. I hope he comes out with another also. Good luck to all you pickers out there. Earl |

Echoing all that you have said! I would also recommend a recording that Gary did with Reggie Brown. It's a dandy! Also an early recording with Buck Reams. They are all outstanding! Check with Ernest Tubb Record Shop in Fort Worth. Gary is one of the great players headquartered in the Metroplex. I just wish I could comprehend a mere portion of his talent and knowledge. What a player and friend! |

Yeah Randall, that Reggie Brown CD is "Texas Lights And Honky Tonk Lights". Here's a couple more CD's featuring Gary on Steel.
Danny Edwards: "Where's The Country"
Jimmy Hilliard: "Memories" |

Howdy Malcolm- I forgot about those! I have Jimmy Hilliard's and it is excellent. I am sure Danny's is a good one, too! In addition to ET's record shop, Discount String Warehouse ph. 270.886.2954 is an excellent source for all of Gary's work. See you! Gotta chime in on Gary's playing. He has a truly unique style and a really nice touch, lots of finesse. His tone is absolutely gorgeous as well. He's one of those players that is immediately recognized when he's heard. Great player and also a great guy as well!
