These neodymium-iron-boron (NIB) Supros are ...

Taking flux density readings "Midgap" is the best way to judge ... Around the Strings (ATS) pickups ... in terms of magnet strength associated with workin' pickups.

I decided to make these so that the flux density (in between the cover plates of the Supro/Valco/National pickups) ... is the same as a fully charged Ricky horseshoe unit ... 225 gauss (midgap).

A fully charged Supro set (2 magnets) is about 120 gauss.

A fully charged Fender Trap is about 170 gauss.

This should be very interesting ... wish I had a Supro pickup here to try them out.

These are for David C. of the Damnwells...

This was a fun diversion ...

I take it "Supro" is no longer in business ... I don't need anymore "legal problems"

In the vernacular of the USPTO, "Supro" is "DEAD" as a trademark for guitars and amplifiers. Long live the pickups, though ...

OK, Clue me in here. About 4 month ago I bought a Silvertone lap with the string-through pickup, Supro style, I thought. I had never played one of these and I wanted to know what they sounded like. It was cheap and I got what I paid for. I emailed you, Rick to ask if you recharged magnets for this type pickup. You said send it over. I pulled it out and there is only one magnet. What looks like the other magnet is a little block of wood shaped exactly like the magnet which is just like the ones in your photo. What gives here? Is there supposed to be one magnet or two? If it's sposed to be two, can you just make me new ones?

That seems to be quite common. I've remaged a ton of these for folks ...

Some have 2 magnets ...

Some have one with an aluminum sibling ...

Some have a wood partner ...

I even had one come through that had a much weaker (when fully charged) magnet ...

I don't have a clue as to whether these "combinations" are stock or aftermarket (result of breakage or theft) ...

Heads up!
Supro is not a dead entity. The Supro name is being used and there is now available a line of amplifiers made by Bruce Zinky (Smoky Amps and former designer of Fender's 'Custom Shop" amps.) and I understand Fender is behind the expansion of production. This may include guitars in the future. Lap steels? Time will tell.

My mistake; I stand corrected! Mr. Zinky has applied to trademark "Supro" for:

-- "musical instruments, namely, guitars and parts for guitars in the nature of necks, bodies, strings and pick guards."

-- "electronic musical equipment, namely, amplifiers, electronic effects in the nature of signal processors, and parts therefor, namely, pedals and speakers"

-- "clothing, namely, T-shirts, jackets and headwear."

("Valco" appears to be "DEAD," Rick. But maybe I should double-check with Loni. )

Well ... at least these rascals are hidden from view ...

I sure don't want to make these for any other reason than to help folks out ... and the satisfaction of makin' something that didn't exist before.

I've had several emails asking why I always want to make stuff stronger than the originals.

When Rickys, Fender Trap/Boxcars and Supros/Valco/National/Whatevers were made ... they were all limited by their magnets natural "BHmax" (Max Energy Product).

You could degauss ("age") them easy enough ... but you couldn't make them stronger than the material dictated.

Well, that ain't the case now ...

So its interesting to see how these Around the Strings pickups respond to varing flux densities ...

I'm starting to get a real good idea what "strength" is optimum for Ricky and Fenders ... and its higher than the originals were capable of ... in my opinion anyway.

The trick is to get these NIBs to behave themselves ... they are quite unruley

Rick, those turned out looking great! Hope they ended up being worth the challenge. Are you going to market them? I wouldn't mind trying a couple out, and I can think of at least one other person for starters who would probably appreciate getting some kicking replacements as well. There's a lot of those old string-thru National/Valco/Supro pups out there...

Re the wooden & other alternate material mags sometimes found in these Supro pups, I heard tell that one was found with TWO wooden blocks. ..sorta defeats the whole idea - heh.

Unlike Rickys and Fender Traps & boxcars ... I don't have a Supro to test these ...

I like to hear for myself what my NIB based magnets do for a pickup ... before I sell 'em.

I'm lookin' forward to David's review ...

I think he's got several Supros ... and he told me he was gonna take these on tour.

They are no biggie to make ... unlike the Horseshoes and MRI ... it just took me a few hours to figure out the best way to get the job done.

If they "pan" out ... ... I'll make them for anyone who needs 'em.

Hey Rick-- I picked up a '60 Supro console a few months ago, been meaning to schlep it over for re-maggin' if needed. Could leave it at the "House of Dr. Rickenstein" until the research is complete. Sometime in the next few days? Lemme know..... --Steve

Hi Rick,

The magnets you made work great! This steel sounds better than ever!

I'm taking it with me over the next three days to Cleveland and Pittsburgh. Look out Cleveland!

We are opening for a band called The Clarks and they have kindly invited me to play steel with them at the Chevrolet Amphitheater Thursday and Friday.

This is the steel that's going.

Many, many thanks for your time and expertise, I will spread the word.

You sure brought this one back. It's the coolest!

Best Regards,

David Chernis
