A friend of mine was asking about Jack Smith who played for the Happy Goodmans, and I told him I would ask on the forum, that someone would surely know his whereabouts and if he is still playing and with who {whom}. Any info would be appreciated.

I think Jack Smith has a studio, or a cd duplication service. Seems like I recall seeing his website a few months back, and he offers a full service recording package.

Last time I saw Jack, he was working for and opening for Johnny Paycheck. He was/is one fine singer as well as an outstanding steel guitarist. I hope he's still playing....

Regards, Paul

Jack is not playing very much. He is VERY successful business man in Nashville. He owns a tape and duplication business and is doing VERY well. Jack is still TOPS in my book. He, Weldon, Lloyd, and Sonny are the main reasons I began playing.

MONSTER PLAYER..... ....
Jack was the FIRST "up close and personal" Steel player that I meet when he was playing for Howard, Rusty, and Vestal Goodman at a concert in a Gymnasium in New Albany, Mississippi in 1970.
I remember a Red ShoBud, D-10, and he was wearing "Glassy" Black Leather Boots that you could see for Miles away.
This fellow was nice enough to talk to ME when I was a "Wimp" of a "Wanna Be" at the tender age of 16.
The last time I saw him, (1980) he was with a Killer Group out of NashBurg playing at the "Lemon Tree Lounge" in Louisville, Ky where Tommy White played also 5 nights a week. He was playing an Emmons', (Black again) S-10 which he TORE UP!. I have a few pictures of this event in my "Famous Steel Players" photo album.

I have a live album that recorded by the Happy Goodman Family in 1971. Jack Smith was the steel player and the playing is awesome. He plays fast clean licks as well as crying steel on the slow tunes. I get this album out from time to time just to enjoy some great steel playing. Ironically, the album was recorded live in St. Louis, home of the ISGC.

I never knew very much about Jack Smith until I attended the North Carolina State Bluegrass Festival in Cherokee, North Carolina a few years back. Connie Smith was on the show and I went to see her since she is my favorite female country singer. Well, if anyone has ever been in the mountains of North Carolina after the sun goes down you know how cold it can be. I was wearing a jacket, and was still cold watching their show, which was outside. It was cold enough to see your breath....Connie introduced her next song "I'll Come Running" as a tune she used to try out Steel Players, because if they could intro that one like Weldon did it on her record, they were O.K. Well, I thought I might hear a train wreck because it was so cold and all....not a chance! Jack intro'd that song just like the record.
and like all the other tunes on the show, he played GREAT under adverse conditions. As a group they all sounded like they were in a recording studio. It was one of the best shows I ever heard.

One of my favorite all-time steelers and he influenced me as much as any, I guess. I got up early on Sunday morning to see those Happy Goodmans! I will never forget....the first Goodman concert I went to see was the first one they did without Jack. I was so upset!
Jack has started a Talent Agency in Nashville, I was told last week.
