Hello fellow steel players. I will be in New York city for the next week, and I was wondering if there are any players, guitar stores or anything else I should check out. Thanks!

| You won't find much in the way of steel guitars in the stores, but you'll find plenty of beautiful standard guitars on 48th street just off 7th avenue. If you're in Greenwich Village, Matt Umanov's is a nice place to stop. Of course, if you're in the Village, there's about 2 million other great places to stop as well. Check out Cafe Reggio if you have a moment and want to get a feel for what the village was like 50 years ago. I think Bob Hofnar is playing at Two Boots, another fun place to eat. |

If you have a week, then you must take the ferry across to Staten Island, catch a #48 'bus to Forest Avenue, and go to Mandolin Bros - it's the best vintage guitar store in the Eastern US.
I used to enjoy 48th St, but Manny's has just been reduced to a guitar supermarket. Rudy's is always worth a look especially the acoustic room upstairs, and 48th St. Guitars can be interesting.
Sam Ash, though should be avoided - especially on a Saturday; it sounds like a fire in a pet shop sometimes - it's more fun just reading your Musicians' Friend catalog in the quiet of your own home....
Matt Umanov's is on Bleecker in the Village, but their prices are high.
Stan Jay's 'Mandolin Bros' is best!

PS.....
I may be a little out of date, but see if John Widgren is playing at the Rodeo Bar with Western Caravan on the East Side on Monday nights. The band is fun, and John plays really well! |

Check out the "ladies" on 11th Ave between about 23rd St. and 30th. St. at around 3 a.m. ...
But seriously, try the Rodeo Bar at 3rd Ave. & 27th St. in Manhattan and Hank's Saloon at 3rd. Ave. & Atlantic Ave. in Brooklyn and some of the places that Bob Hoffnar plays... |

Go to Tribeca Blues, 16 Warren St NY phone 212-766-1070 at 9PM. Buddy Cage will be playing with the Zen Tricksters in a celebration of the music of Jerry Garcia. The Tricksters are a killer band, and Cage is always phenominal with them. Warning-this ain't country. Some of Garcia's stuff is, but there will be lots of jams and other things played, so go with an open mind. You'll love it.
