FYI ... I have nothing to do with this auction. I just think it's cool idea and apparently, well executed.

If you go to the US Patent Office website, you can search patents for many years. You have to install a plug-in but you can view or print them for for free. The hard part can be finding the numbers to search for.

Thanks, Jon! It certainly took a while, but I found it. The high-res, 300 DPI .tif images are free to download. Cool!
I can't paste in the long URL here for some reason. Search for: 1741453, Dec. 1929

Here's the URL for the patent search page: http://patft.uspto.gov/netahtml/srchnum.htm

As Andy said, the original 1929 tricone patent is 1741453. A 1930 patent that shows an alternative tricone configuration, a quad-cone and a single cone with a projecting horn is 1762617.

And if you think three cones is enough, check out 1750881 -- John Dopyera's 1930 design for a 12-cone harp!

1672153 is JD's banjo patent and 1730032 is their banjo uke patent.

Examples of both instruments are pictured at my www.notecannons.com site

Aloha
