Pick up a copy of the Austin Chronicle as soon as you arrive (It's free and everywhere-check out auschron.com to see who's playing around town while you're here). It lists most of the live music happenings and restaurant info. If you need a cool place to stay, I'd suggest the Austin motel, located on South Congress Ave, near the Capitol, and accross the street from the Continental club. 6th street is the Bourbon street of Austin, and smells like it, too. Lots of crazy drunk yuppies and bands that play too loud for free beer. Suggested clubs: Jovitas, The Continental club, the Saxon pub (none of which are on 6th).

Jim, try and check out Barton Springs during the day, you have to pay to get in but it's a way nice place to hang and swimn on a hot sunny day. The Warehouse district is just up the street from 6th street and has Antones for blues etc. If you get there on a tuesday you can check out Toni Price at the Continental club for hippy hour, starts around 7:00 p.m. I think she still has that slot and I think she's great.

Hey Jim,

Check out Redd V's website. He's playing in Austin on the 8th, 9th, 12th, and 13th...
http://www.reddvolkaert.net

You WON'T be dissappointed, I guarantee. Ricky Davis plays pedal steel on *some* gigs with Redd, which is out of this world...

Maybe Ricky will chime in here..?

Have fun.

I'll be playing with James Hand (Pete Mitchell on guitar) at the Saxon Pub (on S. Lamar) 5-7pm on Thursday 7/10, and at the Broken Spoke (further S. Lamar) on Friday 7/11.

Saturday night 7/12, I'll be with Lost John Casner at the Wild Ride Saloon in downtown Cedar Valley (yes, we have a honky tonk here), formerly the Little Wheel.

If you're still here on Sunday, the James Hand Band will be at the Continetal Club 9:30-10:30, opening for HeyBale with Redd, Earl Ball, and maybe Jim Murphy.

Regarding Jesse Pearson's recommendation on Barton Springs. I lived in Austin for 11 years. Beware, sightings of topless women are not uncommon at Barton Springs. Also Barton Springs is honored in "What I like about Texas" sung by Gary P. Nunn. Plus, I believe Herb Steiner is featured on steel in a live version of this song.

And Cornell Hurd at that Wild Ride place on Wednesday, July 9th and Jovita's (a must see) on Thursday, July 10.

Jim Loessberg and Bobby Flores play with Jake Hooker at Ginny's on Friday, 7/11. Man, we do have some great music here.

I hope you are moving to someplace north of Orlando. There isn't much in S. Florida for a music scene, especially for steel. Most of what I have seen is from Orlando and UP.

Roger Rettig is over in Naples playing a show there...

I just moved out of S. FL. to Delaware and have found a lot more going on musically!!

Glad to be in an area where there is real music going on, even if it is less that what it used to be... it is still here and I get out to play it and enjoy it!

All this fine pickin'.... I got to be a part of it. Any jam sessions I should be aware of? I have my 97 American Tele w/B-Bender and my Line 6 Flextone II Amp on stand by. I'm ready to pick and grin! Did I mention I'm a lead / harmony singer too?
