I've been listening to my Aunty Genoa CDs today, and would like to explore the playing of Benny Rogers in more depth.
Is he using the E7th tuning?
I wonder if there are any tabs out there with some of his licks on them?
THanks!

Hi Jeff,
I encourage you to sit down with the C6 tuning and find the licks yourself while listening to the record. It is a great learning experience.
Nearly all of Benny's playing is straight-bar stuff that is very, very easy to find on the fretboard in C6 tuning. |

But didn't he use E7th alot back then? At least my ears think they are hearing E7! |

He did use an E7 tuning alongside the 6th tunings. His E7 had a 3rd on top (G#)... the C6 will afford you the same intervals, having a 3rd on top as well.
It might be helpful to think of the E7 as being the same tuning as the C6 except shifted up a major third, and with the 6th note missing.
Benny's work with Auntie Genoa is great! The meat and potatoes. It's all you'll ever need to play along with a hula band. |

Benny was great...I loved his stuff and I listen to it often. Another great was "Pop" Rogers...his playing was difficult to describe. Often, the notes he didn't play made his playing so appealing...great phrasing. |

I've been playing along to "Party Hulas" lately. Try C6 but tune the 6th string to Bb.
You'll discover that Benny has a lot of tricks in that trickbag. Lots of variations. One of the most difficult things for me in trying to play this stuff are the fast tempos. Not a lot of slow, languid playing.

The only Benny Rogers I've heard has been on the Cord International CD "History of Hawaiian Steel Guitar".
Looks like I need to get more Benny!

Brad:
Check out "Party Hulas" by Genoa Keawe (available at www.mele.com).
Set stereo balance control to right speaker only.
Instant Benny!!!
