Any help is appreciated: I am trying to find out what amp or amps Julian Tharpe played and/or preferred for his 14-string guitars.

| The last time I saw Julian play he was using a Webb. I know he cut at least one of his albums with it. |

Jerry,
Julian's "Take Your Pick" and I believe most of his records were recorded with Peavey amps. The entire time he was with Price, Mandrell, Dickey Betts, and in Nashville Peavey was his amp of choice. I've seen him use two session 400's, LTD's, and 500's and he sounded great through them all. He loved to play loud and they could handle the bottom load without breaking up.
I never had the chance to hear him through a Webb. I'm sure if he used one it could handle the tuning.

Just to add to Paul's post, Julian did use Peavey amps all the time I spent in front of him, he was in Dallas playing with Ray Price in 1970 when I met him,as a young just starting out player, I would go to were ever he was playing and lission, I remember he would bring his M.S.A. to the shop to get some thing done to it and just sit there and play,WoW !!! words can't explain what I heard....Got to know him pretty well, he was great player, had his own sound, you knew when it was him playing, he was one of me hero's while learning to play steel, Maurice, Curly, Julian, were my three mentor's .....

I spent a brief day or so with him in Jan '79 and he told me that the Webb 6-14E amp name was referring to the notion that it would cover the dynamic range of instruments from 6 string to 14 string (extended?) ... hence 6-14E!!! He implied that his requirements were part of that amp's development. Can't remember what amp he was playing though ... but I think it was a Webb 6-14E (which had just come out ... again I think)

Paul, When did Julian play with Barbara Mandrell. I saw her at the Record Shop in the 70's at the time that Midnight Oil was her hot tune. Just wondered if it was him playing steel that night.

I think Julian played with Barbara 72/73??? Paul played with her also, not to long after he was out of high school if I remember right, Paul fill us in on this..

The source of this information is HOLLIS CALVERT of Peavey Electronics. Hollis said that during the early 1970's PEAVEY was considering making a high quality/high power amplifier. Knowing that a steel guitar can place greater demands on an amp than most other instruments;and knowing Julian's reputation for playing a 14 string steel with a wide pitch range,PEAVEY invited Julian to come stay with the PEAVEY crew for a week or longer,and test amplifiers. The end result was/is the PEAVEY Session 400.

If Graham and Wayne are correct, it looks like we owe a lot to Julian Tharpe for contributing to the development of two great amps: The Webb 6-14E and the Peavey Session 400.

Julian done so much for the advancement of steel guitar. He had the most unique style of playing steel guitar that I ever heard.
Here are some more things that he done for steel guitar. He was a teacher, innventor, writer and could play any style of music on the steel.His recordings 4 albums, testify to his incredible stylings.
It's about time he started getting the recognition he deserves. I knew him and his family quite well. Last summer my wife and I spent time with his last living brother in southern Alabama. I know they and hundreds more would like to see Julian inducted into the SGHOF someday.
This comes up from time to time on the Steel Guitar Forum and I'll state it again, Julian Tharpe and Reece Anderson both belong in the SGHOF.

I have a picture from 1974 showing Julian with his then brand new JET XIV and just behind him to his right is a Sho-Bud single channel amp. Unfortunately the picture is too poor quality to be able to post.
