I will be in Austin Texas on June 20, 21, and 22, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me where I can hear some good Steel players? I would also like to hear some local Jazz guitar players, and any suggestions for Mexican restaurants would be greatly appreciated too! |

Bob -
Well, I don't know about "good" steel players, but I'll be at the Ale House at Olde Pecan Street on 6th street Friday night 9:30-1:30 with Floramay Holliday (www.floramay.com)She's a great singer/songwriter,(I call it Americana, she says Alt-Country) and I get to play lots of styles - country, folk, bluegrass, rock, R&B, and some Undefineable
It's a new place I haven't played before, and we're breaking in our new rhythm section and our new hot 19 year old guitar player. Should be fun, and 6th Street is always a scene.
As far as Jazz, the Elephant Room on Congress is great, I'm not sure who's there.
Check the Austin Chronicle on-line, or pick one up when you get to town.
As far as Mexican food, there's lots of great ones - Guero's, Chuy's, Curra's are 3 very high on the hipness scale, but there are others all over the place.
Don't forget to check out the lake while you're here - Iguana Grill and the Oasis have great views (and Mexican food)
Have a great time this weekend
Say Hi if you can make it Friday

Bob my only gig this weekend is at the Continental Club afternoon gig with Billy Dee.
Redd Volkaert usually plays this gig; but he's outta town.
Billy Dee was Dale Watson's Bass player for years..and Billy played on all of Redd's CD's...and has his own CD out and it's classic country.....so of course I'll be playing ALOT of Steel guitar> so stop by.
WE play 3pm till 6:30 on Sat.

Arty, Ricky, thanks for your replies. I'll try to make it out to hear both of you play. Ricky, is Billy Dee the same singer/bass player that lived in Nashville for years? If it is, I used to hear him at Skulls Rainbow Room on Printers Alley with Gene O'neil playing steel. Those were some good times. I used to sit in on guitar once in awhile. I figured that he was the bass player on Redd's cd, but I wasn't sure. I wonder if any of you know if
Herb Steiner is playing anywhere while I'll be in town? Any input is welcome! One of the great things about this forum is the brotherhood! It's great to be able to travel anywhere and find out who's playing steel in the area.[This message was edited by Bob Watson on 17 June 2003 at 02:50 AM.] |

If you really want to see a classic honky-tonk and hear country music out in the country, come out to Club 21 in scenic Uhland, TX. I'll be playing steel and maybe some guitar with Rusty Daughterty. I haven't worked with him before but I believe you'll hear all the classic stuff, shuffles, waltzes and so forth. --JR |

I just wanted to thank everyone that offered input of where to go and what to do in Austin. I didn't get around to seeing everything that I wanted, but I really enjoyed the short time I was there. I got to see some great players, including, Ricky Davis ( I wish I would have gotten there sooner ) Don Pollack ( who is playing with
Dale Watson ) and Herb Steiner ( playing with James Hand, with Pete Mitchell on guitar ), they all sounded great. Austin is a wonderful town. It was great to see a place where people support traditional Country and Western music. It also has some great restaurants. I am looking foreward to my next visit. Hopefully I will have time to see some of the other players that I missed seeing this visit. |
