Hi Dave I was reading your post naming the Great Julian Tharp. I had the great great pleasure of working with Julian form 70 t0 72 when I was playing bass for Ray Price. There was Julian, Phil Baugh and Blondie, needless to say what a trip. I have a lot of fun memories of Julian but one of my favorites was when he and his wife had me over for dinner, so I got have a good eve one on one whith him. He was a good man, funny, smart and a heck of a steel picker. For the life of me Dave, I can't remember how he died. I'm thinking it was something bad. Maybe you can refresh my memorie. Thanks. db |

You are right,it was something bad.He died at the gas station not far from his house, somebody had hit him with the hammer in the head and killed him.It was a robbery. This is what his son told me in Dothan,AL.few years back.Sad story.

Man, I wish there were some live recordings of the group with Julian, Phil and Blondie, not to mention Dale who many people tell me, is a gifted bass man.
In fact a while back I was swapping some emails with a jazz influenced piano/guitar player who played with rock bands in the 1960s, later turning to country and lounge gigs in the 1970s.
This individual recalled Jerry Inman's Individuals, which featured Dale and fellow forumite Carl West, as a hot band, and particuarly noted that Dale was one of the few country bassists he saw that could really do the job.
Yeah.. so if there's any live tapes out there, bring them on.

There maybe gun control, abortion control, tax and automobile control,
but sadly in this case there is not likely to be a 5 day wait to get a hammer with a psycological check to get it.
Not enough nasty NUT control...
I hope they caught the SOB, what a horrible waste of talent. |

Julian was my dear friend, a mentor and one of my all time heroes of the steel guitar. I still miss him as do many of his friends and family. I visited his last living brother near Ozark, AL last summer. We went out to his gravesite. He rests near his parents, today in a little Country Baptist cemetary near Skipperville, AL. His stone reads one of the World's Greatest Steel Guitarists.
Those that killed his body can never touch his soul, his friendship, nor the great music legacy that he left with us. There are 4 albums by Julian and some live recordings scattered about. I have a couple live recordings and all his albums.
The albums are: "Take Your Pick," "The Jet Age," "Southern Fried Steel," "Deep Feelings," and "12 + 14= Country Jazz recorded with the late SGHOF member Zane Beck.
I strongly believe that Julian THarpe and Maurice "Reece" Anderson both belong in the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame.
May GOD bless each of you!

There may be some long lost tapes of Julian and Jimmy Bryant surfacing in the near future. I was lucky enough to have played several dates (as a bassist) with these two guys in the mid 70's. What an honor!! and indeed a humbling experience for an early 20's kid. I'll never forget it. |
