I've got some older ones. They just seem
to have more character. Each one sort of
has it's own personality. The newer steels
are great, but they sound like.....
well...new steels!

I play a 1974 MSA classic D12 9 & 5 built for me to my specifications and I wouldn't trade it presently for anything unless the new Melliniums have something better to offer. I love the sustains and ease of playing. It is a bit heavy, but you can't have everything. I use a 10k pot Goodrich volume pedal and two evans amps 1983 FE500 LV w/JBL E130 and 1999 E200 LV w/stock 15". My style is really not so much the new speedy style so maybe that makes a different also. I like the fatness of the older steels, especially on the C6th where my bottom is very low.

Endecott keyless, lefthanded,S-10 with pad, looks like an older MSA underneath with round cross-rods, so it's probably old, but I don't know how old

My current main guitar is a 79 model, but it's a Franklin, so the mechanics are still state of the art for 'modern' guitars. I have a new Weissenborn style guitar, a new Asher lap steel, a middle aged dobro, but a '30s National, and a 50s Fender deluxe 8. I also have some older amps, including a 50s Fender Pro and a 60s Showman, but the amp I mostly use is a 2002 model THD tube head.

For me it's 99% tone. My newer guitars sound great, that's why I play them (in particular, the new Weissenborn sounds better than any prewar guitar I have ever played). If there was an older pedal steel that had a tone I absolutely loved, I would probably make the funky mechanics work for me. I'm lucky that I am crazy about the sound of my Franklins, because they also work so well. The only older guitar that I would think about owning would be a ZB, because of the unique killer sound of those axes. If I ever were to do such a thing, I would put a very simple copedent on the thing and never touch the mechanics.

I play a 1977, S-11 RusLer. It still sounds great to my ears (huh!) Never had any major problems with it, even though it's got thousands of hours of playing. I have ordered, and hope to receive my new S-12 Zumsteel soon. I'm still keeping the RusLer, though.
