Just heard "Old 55" on the radio for the first time in MANY years! Who played steel on this Eagles tune? Was Al Perkins the steel player for them?
Also heard Connie Smith "The hinges on the door". Who played steel on that?
Man 2 great songs in 1 night!!!

Thanks! I thought that was Al Perkins, but didn't know for sure...man what a great tune! Those guys sure can sing!
Jim,
I think it may be Weldon on the Connie Smith tune also. There is one of his signature licks in the solo, but thought it might be someone else tipping their hat to him. The rest of the song doesn't sound like him IMHO, but just that one lick does.

I think Bernie played steel on some of the Eagles stuff. Bernie and Randy Meisner were the "country" influences of the Eagles and, after they left in the mid-70's I was much less interested in what the others did (it was technically interesting, but not so suited to my taste).
I actually got to meet Bernie a couple of years ago. I was running the Taylor Guitars booth at Merlefest in Wilkesboro, NC, when he walked up and introduced himself. You should have seen me trying to keep my composure. The cool thing was, he wasn't there to play, as was his former bandmate Chris Hillman (who also came by); he just came to listen to the music and to "network". He was a very nice guy. It's cool when you get to meet one of your heroes.

I agree. The Eagles best work was done BEFORE Hotel California. in many ways, their worst album sold the most copies.
