Hello all,
Recent threads have mentioned Messrs. Tharpe and Newman, and I am using one of Doug's great instructional books now, but must admit I've have heard very little actual backup/lead playing by these fellows. Could you all point me to records/songs by artists that feature some playing by these fine gentlemen? Maybe I'll luck out and some of them could be found on that incredible Record Lady site.
Thanks to all. |

I don't have my copy available, but check into the album called "Hillbilly Jazz" from the 70's. As I recall, it featured vocals on a number of Western swing songs with Doug Jernigan and Vasser Clements on fiddle providing the backup. |

Doug's website, www.digndoug.com, has some pretty darn tasty examples of Doug's work. |

Try Jeff Newman's website www.jeffran.com, or call him at 800-373-3418..He has more material recorded with him playing than probably any other player alive; much of it is instructional, but he has a load of it just instrumentality. Fantastic stuff, and it shows a lot of versatility; what he plays at shows is tasteful, unusual, and interesting..and he can tear the standards up. He is one of my all time favorites to listen to, and see in person..A professional. |

Just thought I'd correct the above links.
www.jeffran.com and www.digndoug.com
(both urls had a period after com....a no-no)

I just got Jazz By Jernigan from the forum shop.
Just mind blowing stuff and so cleanly played.
A real inspiration for what it possible on PSG. His DEXTERITY is just scary!! The double sense intended.[This message was edited by David L. Donald on 24 April 2003 at 02:44 AM.] |
