I just recently listened to Doug's version of Bach's "Jesu Joy of Mans Desiring" for the first time in many years, and I'm still just as amazed as I was the first time I heard it.
It's incredible!!! Usually I can tell right off if something is overdubbed, but this is so seemless to my ears I just can't tell for sure. It almost sounds like solo steel, but it's hard to imagine that it's possible.
Does anybody know for sure?
Overdubbed or not, it's a beautiful moment for the steel guitar!

It's a one pass solo recording on C6 with a high G string. In 1985,after I asked him about it at Scottys,Doug was kind enough to send me a hand written tab for that tune. After floundering thru it a few times I could see that it was technically possible but thought I better wait a couple decades before I tried it again. Like Dougs' "Streets of Laredo",it has a lot of open strings, tip of the bar work and slants combined with a non-standard pedal or two - microscopic brain surgery comes to mind.

Randy Beavers played a beautiful version of this at the Dallas show recently. I think it's gonna be on his new CD (shhhh!!)
