| Can you think of a better way to spend a tax refund than on PSG recordings? I want to begin a serious Buddy collection. Forum friends, what are the 5 basic recordings that all of us should have? |

1. The black album
2. Steel Guitar Jazz album
3. Christmas CD
4. "Time" CD bye Ray Price
5. 1977 two record set recorded at the 1977 ISGC
ALL of Buddy's Albums are absolute "musts"; but if I had to hold it down to 5, the above I would simply would not be without.

IMHO, the essential legacy of BE music would include these recordings
1. The Bear Family RAY PRICE box set, which has the great albums that BE played on, and also great Jimmy Day material;
2. The Bear Family ERNEST TUBB box set entitled "Yellow Rose of Texas," which also has fine Bobby Garrett selections;
3. "Emmons Guitar Inc." popularly known as the Black Album;
4. The CD entitled "Steel Guitar Jazz In 4-Wheel Drive," which contains the classic jazz album plus all of BE's singles/45s prior to the jazz album;
5. The "Christmas Album" on Step One;
6. The two-CD set of the 1977 ISGC recordings;
7. The entire 6-CD Emmons/Pennington/Swing Shift series on Step One.
These are my favorites, though I agree with Carl that all of Buddy's recordings fall into the "essential" category, in my opinion.

I like them all, too. I don't think there are any bad ones out there. At least none that I've ever seen or heard. There are personal favorites, but they're all good.
Of course the Black album is a classic. The Emmons/Pennington albums swing. The stuff with Price and ET are fantastic, too. I also like the Live in Denver CD.

Who remembers that great solo by Buddy on Merle Haggard's 'Blue Suede Shoes' from his Elvis tribute album? You can hear Roy Nichols (or someone) laughing at it's audacity!

Roger Miller's album A Trip In The Country has some absolutely awesome playing by Buddy (even by his standards) on it. This album is revered by those lucky people fortunate enough to have a copy.
Roger - it was Roy Nicholls laughing out loud on the recording of Blue Suede Shoes. He was amazed so much at the Emmons solo that his natural reaction was to laugh at the outrageousness of it. Luckily the producer decided to keep it in. |

Actually, there is one album people tend to overlook or do not know about. The E9 Course that Buddy did for the Emmons Guitar Company is full of great playing and is a great listening piece.

Also, check out Duane Eddy's "Twang a Country Song"
Contains the selections: Crazy Arms, Window Up Above, Sugarfoot Rag, ..and many others..

You reminded me of the tune Renegade Picker from the Steve Young album of the same name. Buddy is all over it and the album, too. I'll have to dig out the phonograph and the album to give it another listen. Great stuff!

Larry - 'Hear, hear' on the Ray Charles album ('Volcanic Action Of My Soul') - great work by BOTH maestros; I wish they'd reissue this one!
I THINK it was Buddy on that version of 'Lonesome Me' by Lee Hazelwood and Nancy Sinatra - another very flambuoyant solo. Before I played steel, I stole that 'ride' and did it on Telecaster. Thanks, 'E'!

You are right about the E9 instrumental album Buddy recorded. That should E9 101 for "anybody" wanting to learn E9 the right way. And it's awful good just to listen to when you want to hear some good shuffles,
and good pickin'!

In addition to the forementioned classics, I'd give one more thumbs up to the "Expedition E9" recording, previously mentioned by Bruce and Dave. The singularly best E9 learning tool I've ever seen.
