I've used a compressor for years with a Les Paul type of guitar (1980 Ibanez Artist) and to get the best sound you need to use a volume pedal. Put your compressor between the guitar and the pedal as for a compressor to work to it's fullest you need to have the volume knobs on the guitar all the way on. If you start to roll them back, the compression starts to go away too. On guitar I like an MXR DynaComp. I've got two of the very old original ones, and also one of the re-issues which are very good too. A good recorded example of the DynaComp is the Merle Haggard recording of "That's The Way Love Goes" with the great guitar ride by Reggie Young.... JH
