What a privilege it was to meet Tom. I have met many warm and gracious people in the realm of steel guitar, but none warmer or more gracious than Mr. Tom Killen.
As busy as all of the Jones Boys were, Tom went out of his way to talk steel with me. He also showed me some moves that had my eyes bugging out. Outstanding!
It was a very good day at Wild Adventures Park in Valdosta, GA. When the star is George Jones, a large crowd is a sure bet. The group I play for, The Michael Stacey Band, had a great time. It was an honor to open on the show with a legend. Meeting Tom made for an unforgettable experience for me.
Thanks, Tom.

Steve:
Well, it was borderline cold in South Georgia yesterday. The temp topped out at about 48 degrees. Last weekend it was about 65 degrees - which would have been much better for an outdoor gig. At least it didn't rain.
You are right about Tom knowing the licks. He can really nail them. And the cool weather didn't hurt the tone he was getting - it was terrific.

I met Tom in the late 80's. I was working with the Shotgun Red band. We flew down to "Jones Country" in Texas for a show. The airlines did a number on my guitar and broke off the 6th string peg on both necks, (and mangled the case, too.) Tom offered to let me use his guitar. Luckily there was just enough thread left on the pegs to get them hooked on. I think he stood close to my side of the stage during most of our show. Just in case. Great guy and fantastic player, too. (Pretty cool gig, too!)

And Jones lost a real fine lead guitar player when Steve Hinson left. Stood there and watched Tom play for four years...now Steve plays Steel for Randy Travis. And doing a fine job from what I hear folks say about him.
But Jones still has Tom though, and as I said In another post, It just don't get much better than that.

George is doing a Canadian tour next month. Hopefully Tom Killen will be with him in Kelowna on the 21st of March so that I can meet him before or after the show.

I'm glad to see that Tom has not changed in the many years. I use to play in a band with Tom when we lived in Missouri. I was on bass then and Tom of course was on the steel. I'm proud to say that he was a good friend to me then and still is today. Tom and I go back to the late 70's when he and I played for a classmate of mine "Bill Barnett". Tom was a great player then, and got me started with the steel. Have been on mine for 12 years now. Doing great with my own band and having fun running up and down the road. If anyone reading this can get in touch with Tom please give my E-mail address to him and tell him to get in touch with me. I'd sure like to catch up with him some time. It's been way too long since he and I have been in touch with each other. Thanks in advance to anyone that may tell Tom. Keep steeling Tom. You're hot buddy!!! Robert Jones |
