Hello, on the "Slide" cd that I bought from the forum there is a song "It's All In the Game" by Bill West. In that song is a part that has a harp or harpsichord sound. Is that being played on the steel and if so how is it done?

I believe that Doyle Grisham told me that it was a steel.

I don't know the answer to your question, but have always been a fan of Bill West and his unique sounds on the Steel. Always enjoy hearing the song he wrote with Dottie West, "Here Comes My Baby"; it will always be a classic in my eyes. Does anyone know if he is still playing?

BILL WEST was/is one of the pioneers of the "Diatonic Tuning" concept. Other great steel players e.g. JERRY BYRD have used it as well. In plain simple English,Bill tunes his steel to a major scale, instead of C6th or E9th. This gives a unique voice/sound to the instrument without the use of special electronic effects. It is a challenge to master this,as it involves more right-hand work but less effort with the left hand or "bar hand". BOBBY LEE has a really good analysis of this concept, available on the Forum, free of charge. Check it out!
