How many sit down or stand up when playing steel?

I like to use a foot volume pedal when I play and never could get used to using it while standing, therefore I sit when I play.

I always sit. I figure that's why it's called a "lap steel." My pedal steel legs won't extend very high. I used to have an old double neck Stringmaster and occasionally played it standing up. So I guess it just depends on the instrument.

I usually sit but when gigging I stand up. However, I've noticed my playing is not as good when standing. But since 99% of the audience doesn't know any better, and the band looks better with everyone standing, I usually stand.

I have a D8 on four legs so I can't see the sense of me using my legs as well.

I prefer to "semi-stand"...I use a fold flat high stool which, when opened, is just the right height for me to use a foot volume pedal while taking the stress out of standing.

I always stand when playing live -- looks better with the band, and I like to move around. I use a contraption called an "outrigger", which Ted Smith of Melobar made -- it's the back half of a fiberglas resonator guitar that the steel fits into, so I can strap it on like a Dobro.

For lap steel I stand. I got one of those metal sawhorses we were talking about a few weeks back and made a good stand out of it. It works out pretty well.

I stand, I never sit. Well, almost never . .

In the studio, it's easier to just stand because I always have to move from place to place - the board, the amps, mics etc., and getting up and down all the time can be pretty inconvenient.

At a live show it's a lot quicker to hit the deck when the bullets & bottles fly. Plus I play
Guitar and often keep it slung across my back when I'm playing Steel. It looks better to stand on stage. As Zeb Carver once said to his young son: "If you sit down, it looks like you're playing a typewriter !"

...stand.

The sitting position is the only thing I don't like about playing pedal guitar.

I play guitar & lap steel, so I have been playing standing up with the lap on a stand for quite a while. It makes it easier to change from guitar to lap. There are some pictures of my set up on my web page. http://community.webshots.com/user/keefriff

What he said. Makes it possible to go from guitar to steel during the same song; a real nice touch for live shows.
