Well I'm done. It looks like the palace is going 4 piece without a steel guitar.
I was let go at the end of the night tonight so I packed up for the last time there.
I had an eight year run there so it's really time to do something else anyway.
I appriciate the support you guys and gals have given me in the past and I just wanted you all to know whats going on there.
It still appears that this is over me outselling the 2 stars with my Christmas c.d. but, it doesn't matter at least I can do some different things again.
Thanks,
Mike Sweeney

That's a tough break, Mike. It's too bad they (the stars and the management) don't realize that the steel draws it own share of people.

One thing for sure, the next time I'm in Nashville, the Palace is one place I won't be!

No steel...no meal.

Donny,
Like I said it's time to do some other things anyway. I'm just glad they were nice enough to fire me this close to Christmas.LMAO.
I was planning on leaving after Christmas anyway so it's just a matter of stepping everything else up.
Heck, just go down on Broadway or the Station Inn you'll hear steel there. You might even see me on lower Broad.

Well, one less place to go hear the steel in Nashville. I really hate to hear that, Mike. But, we'll be watching for you on the "New World Tour". Pat

Thanks for the kind words. But I didn't post this to get people to buy c.d.s. It would be nice but it's close to Christmas and I know peoples money is tight. But if anybody wants one or two e-mail me and I'll tell you how to get them.
Sorry I'm going to miss your shindig next weekend I know it will be great.
Teresa and I will be o.k. I always manage to land on my feet.

That leaves only E.T.'s Record Shop to draw me to that area. I have gray hair so they don't want me at the Opry, and no steel at the Palace.
Sorry about the job, Mike.

I may be biased, but I thought Mike was by far the most interesting musician in the band. What a darn shame, that band will not be as good without him and I don't see the crowds getting bigger because they dropped one of the musicians.

Gee Mike,
Sorry to hear that, I guess that means that with the Opry at 4th and Broadway the only steel guitar in that area is at the ET Record shop.
I remember that Reba had several Christmas party's for her crew and after the party many of then would get their pink slips.
I'll keep my ears open for you buddy,
Cookie

I think it would send a message if you are in the area going to ET's or somewhere close to go to the door at the Palace and ask before going in, who's in the band and when they don't mention steel guitar, tell them that's what you came to hear and leave. When they see dollars walking away that hits where it hurts. What do you all think?

Absolutely to what Donny & Jim said. I've found the best way to get a point across is to let your $$ do the talkin'.
...so that they may go the way of the Edsel, or wise up & get steel back on the bandstand.
Keep your tailgate up.

I can honestly say that whenever I lost a job a better one came along.

I'm sure that's what's in store for you, Mike.

Thanks for the update.

I agree that we should not support bands that drop their Steel. I've had people here disagree, saying that once the attendance is back up they'll add Steel, but I guess that's another thread.

Mike, I'm sorry to hear of your loss of work. But not suprised. If in fact you were let go because you were outselling in the CD arena it goes to show how dumb they are and how much business sense they all lack. IF they had a brain they would have tried to position themselves with you, not without you ! A Country band at the Palace which covers all the tunes, without a Steel ? I don't think so.

I for one will contact the Palace and let them know of my dissapointment and that my regular visits to Nashville will no longer include the Palace for music and dinner. Shame on them..

By the way , this is a very common move for business's that are on their way out of business..

Your a talent for sure..you will end up in a better situation for sure..

Oh yea... I just had to add this..what morons..if the crowds are down it's probably because the local folks are tired of the singers ! I doubt anyone ever said to the management on the way out the door... " I'm leaving here..I'm really sick and tired of everytime I come here it's the same ole' Pedal Steel Player " !

Here's a song they should sing now...

I could while away the hours
Conferrin' with the flowers
Consultin' with the rain
And my head, I'd be scratchin'
While my thoughts were busy hatchin'
If I only had a brain.

Sorry about the gig Mike. And I will be inquiring when I go to the Palace again, at the door, bout who's in the band and when they say there's no steel I WILL TURN around and leave and tell them NO STEEL-NO DEAL and leave.

Hey Mike...long time no see! I hate that you lost the gig. When it comes time to trim the band, they always choose the steel player.Don't fret over it cause everyone knows who you are so you will not be out of work for long.Take care!

When one door closes, another one opens. Maybe you can get a job recording steel for the Nashville Palace karaoke.

Sorry to hear this Mike. This is just another example of the negative management of the Nashville scene. When a club has been operating that long and then starts cutting back on it's music staff, it's a sign that the state of country music is still on the skids. Cutting more of the country sound from the band isn't going to help the situation. Maybe when the current management of Nashville runs it completely to a standstill, they'll leave town and those with experience and knowledge can jump back in and build it up again.
Any fiddles in the band?
Damn rock and roll want-a-be's can't make it in their own areas around the country so they just go to Nashville and pass off their lack of rock talent as country.
I always wondered why the contemporary rock stars don't put fiddles and steel in their bands? It's just a one way street.
Ok...I let off some steam. Now I'm fine Ok, now rock enthusiasts, flame away.

This is a time of Celebration!!! Mike is in fact a great steel guitarist but he is much more than that. Mike is a great person with great skills in life and humanity. He certainly would not have done to someone else what they done to him but then again he has class. Well..... in all fairness the Nashville Palace folks have class as well....it's just "LOW CLASS". Like he said himself..."I always land on my feet". He will no doubt move on to better things. Just remeber folks...a good man will always get by the bad times...but a great man will do it with style and dignity, and there's no doubt in my mind how Mike will pass through this door. As far as the CD's Mike...You know I already have em and I know you are not having a pity party and you aren't on skid row so I'm not buying another set ...but any of you folks who don't have his CD's are missing some great steel work...just ask Lloyd Green...The only negagtive I see is not for Mike Sweeney but for me. We were planning a trip out with some friends to go out to the Palace and listen to some fantastic steel work. Now we have to wait till we see where "he chooses" to play again. It's worth the wait. Finally let me say this...Waylon Jennings...George Jones...Ray Price....seems Mike is in some pretty good company.
God Speed my friend,

Ray Walker
PS. I got that Emmons from BA
