| Hey, Buddy, this is Brett. I'm practicing very hard on my steel guitar. I wonder which neck you use when you play because I've seen different players stay on the C6th neck if they play doubleneck steels. I've finally gotten used to my A & B pedals. I use my pedals a lot more now than I did when I first started playing steel. I won't stop playing steel. Brett Day, Emmons S-10 |

Brett, you have asked the Master. If you have ever watched him play, you will see that he jumps from one neck to the other without missing a note. I have been trying to do that for 50 years and sometimes I am succesfull. but just as often I am not. It does take concentration. Lots of luck. Buddy, you're on now, get me out of this.

Brett,
Congratulations on the A and B pedals. Attitude and will overcomes all obstacles and each accomplishment builds the confidence it takes to carry on to the next level. Continue practicing hard and love what you're doing and it will reflect in your playing.
As with most D-10 players, the neck you use is determined by the style of music you're playing. The C6 tuning is generally used for styles other than country, though it was the heart of the country sound before pedals. Perry is correct regarding my switching of necks during a song, but I acquired most of that skill while playing a Fender non-pedal steel, as did many other players of that period.
Perry: I've been playing approximately 54 years, so if my math is correct, you should be getting the hang of it some time in the next four years.

| Buddy. I said this once before, but I'll say it again. If I practice hard, I hope to become as good as your were 50 years ago. I probably should have broken your fingers that night at the Bostonia Ballroom after the way you played Little Coquet(sp). You were with the Tater then. But then I wouldn't have any inspiration except Jerry Bird. |

There's no reason you can't be playing for at least another 20 years. You don't play any less than you did when I first heard you pick. You're still in there gettin' it. Don't sell yourself short!

Oh come on now Buddy, 50 more years ain't nuthin'....you could do another 50 with the same picks ! ....but you may have to change the 3rd string a few times...

AS long as we are asking questions, did you ever work any road dates with Haggard? A friend up here swears he saw you and Phil Baugh with Merle on a show here in Wis I told him "No Way", he says it's so. So?

Last night I was driving back from Charlie Stepps and listening to your wonderful CDs,
and thought back when I first heard you play,It was in Omaha Ne.(1964) I knew nothing about the Steel Guitar, But was totally in awe of the beautiful sounds That YOU!! were creating. I am sure God has a long term plan for you and your talent and I among millons of others have been able to experience through your creativity that wonderful talent.

| Buddy, I saw you,for the first time, with Johnny Bush when you were at the Midnite Jamboree about a month ago.And you were just incredible. Didn't see it raining but anyways your hat shrunk. Aw,,whats the big deal,,so Buddy plays good
so what? gimmicks thats what it's all about,he uses "gimmicks". I know. I saw Buddy a few years ago in NY and stood behind him as he played "linus and lucy" no big deal,,I came up closer and closer as he played,,I saw the
gimmicks.
They were attached to his right arm..5 of them..same deal with the left arm,,so what?
So those were his hands with all that talent, and he wears that Derby to look cool.
Gimmicks all Gimmicks often reffered to as fingers and hands and a bar ..he bites his nails too,,,Shhhhh and besides that he wears that Rolex watch, that slows him down.
Dont tell anyone I told ya'll this little secret ya hear?? Hell Man,,if I had his fingers and hands I could play just as well and maybe better too. You got that??
and I saw him miss a note once too.Well maybe
it was half a note,,,I forget,,Im getting old

| Years ago I saw Buddy perform at our Public Library Auditorium. He didn't impress me until he used that chin lever! Man...he sure got some fantastic sounds after that! It was a memorable evening Buddy...you probably won't recall our brief meeting after the show, however I'm fairly positive I was the only NON-pedal steeler in the crowd of wide-eyed pedal enthusiasts who were in total awe of you as was I. Hope you keep playing for at least another 30 years! |

Geesh: no wonder Buddy's so good he's been playing since he was 2 years old. Must have used a potty as his first packa-seat? do that means he was playing good before he was potty trained? I didn't know he was younger than Smiley til now.Smileys been playing (well he's been accused of it)for some 50 years and he isn't potty trained yet?

The last session I worked with Johnny, Pete Wade set the studio time and I called the musicians, so I'm assuming Johnny is producing his current recordings.
