I was reading a guide to maintenance on a reso (mine is a Fender, made in China) and it said if the nut is plastic replace it. Since my strings are not the same height, I need to do that. I didn't find anything in the archives here about what a nut ought to be made of, or a bridge either.

Do I get a choice, or should I just take it to a shop and tell the man to do it to it?

You need a bone nut and maple bridge inserts, or ebony tipped maple.
