Who played Steel on Red Foley "Old Shep" record???

In my continuing effort to help the bad Stray Animal" situation here in Ohio I need "Animal" song info. Such as Titles of songs, Artist that made recording etc. I got a beautiful LP Sat of Red and "Old Shep" was on the cover. Anybody able to help.? Ed Naylor Steel Guitar Works.

I haven't heard that song by Red Foley for about 40 years, but I would make a guess that it may be Jerry Byrd. Maybe Jack Byrd can chime in here and ask his brother.

I would say it was Jerry Byrd....or at least
I've always believed that it was? I could have been wrong ever since 1947?? or so??

Jody and Doug: I agree completely with both assessments. I have always known it was Jerry but never saw or heard any proof one way or the other. I'll leave it at that because anyone else who plays that well must be a Jerry Byrd fan as well as we are !!

I never thought of those.I need the words to "Where oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone".As part of this project I would like the names of any Steel Players that played on "Animal" theme songs. Could a Steeler play "Alley Cat" as a solo??.My project here not only will help animals, I hope to tie in "Steel Players" so STEELS get attention. Any suggestions? Ed

I used to play "Alley Cat" 30 years ago. Seems like it laid real easy on C6.

Perry: It appears that you and I have more in common than 50+ years of playing. Tennessee Border was the first song I learned on the C6 tuning. As for all the great music Jerry Byrd and Red Foley made together, Jerry's tone and technique was an ideal match for the rich quality of Red's voice. When I was working the Opry during that period, the consensus was that Red wasn't selling a lot of records because his voice was too good for country music. With today's ears, looking back and comparing him with other country singers has proven he was one of the better voices of that period.

Buddy. I started with a Stella guitar, a pocket knife and the tooth from a comb. We didn't have electricity on the ranch. I was trying to copy Roy Wiggens..Which was fine for the times. But Jerry Bird just blew me away. That was 57 years ago but I still have hope. There's one thiing for sure, no one enjoys playing this contraption any more that I do.

It was Jerry playing. I don't know of another singer that Jerry played with that he enjoyed any better than Red Foley. We as a family always loved Red to pieces and played the old 78's until they were worn out. I agree with Buddy's comments 100% about Red Foley's voice. Unfortunately I do not have one single recording of Red and Jerry. Rick is that CD still available and what is the name of it.

Then theres Little Joe the Wrangler ,His horse name was "Chaw" , but he was riding ole "Blue Rocket " with a slicker o`er his head.

Walter Brennan had a version of ole "Yeller" or something like that . Perhaps someone else with a better memory can coe up with the right name

Hey guys, one night I was playing at a VFW and the guitar player was singing OLD DAN and the bass player just stood there with tears running down his face, it was the first time he had ever heard it. Tony ; It`s strange how some people get caught up in a song. That`s why "Country Music" has always been so popular. This stuff today dont have any soul to it.

You must be a pretty good singer, to put that much feeling in your songs. Thats what country is about.

How much is that "Doggie In The Window"?
Sang by Patti Page, is another good song
